Her Story

About Joy

Georgetta Jones-Reed, known professionally as "Dr. Joy Jones-Reed", is a seasoned educator, empowerment coach, grief coach, life coach, author, and speaker with more than 25 years of dedicated service in the field of education and over a decade of experience in personal development and coaching. Having risen through the ranks from substitute teacher to high school principal, she has built a distinguished career rooted in a steadfast commitment to student success, family empowerment, and transformational leadership. As the founder of Expressions of Joy, Empowerment and Coaching, she has expanded her reach beyond the classroom to serve individuals across all walks of life, guiding them toward healing, purpose, and personal growth. The turning point in Dr. Jones-Reed's journey came in 2016 when she experienced the profound loss of both parents within the same year. Rather than surrendering to grief, she channeled that pain into a powerful mission of service, pursuing certifications in grief coaching and life coaching to equip herself with the tools needed to walk alongside others through life's most difficult seasons. Her work addresses some of today's most pressing emotional wellness challenges, including anxiety, depression, trauma, and loss, offering individuals not only a space to heal but a pathway toward discovering renewed hope and purpose. Her approach is deeply grounded in faith, authenticity, and the unwavering belief that adversity, when embraced with courage, can become the very foundation of one's greatest contribution. Dr. Jones-Reed's impact has earned her widespread recognition, including being named among the Top 50 Most Influential Women and being featured in Black Women of Business magazine, as well as receiving a Charity Award for her outstanding community leadership. She is an active advocate for breast cancer awareness and remains passionately committed to community outreach and service. Currently, she is developing an inspirational devotional book and planning an upcoming empowerment conference, continuing to expand her platform and deepen her reach. Through every role she holds, Dr. Jones-Reed exemplifies what it means to lead with purpose, serve with compassion, and inspire others to rise above their circumstances.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Joy

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to faith, perseverance, and my commitment to turning grief into purposeful service. When I lost both of my parents in 2016, I made a conscious choice not to become bitter, but to allow that pain to redirect me toward helping others. That decision led me to become a grief coach and life coach, and it remains the driving force behind everything I do.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The most meaningful guidance I have carried throughout my journey is this: "The race is not given to the swift, nor the strong. I have equipped you. Run the race." This has reminded me that success is not solely about talent or speed, but about endurance, preparation, and trusting in the purpose you have been called to fulfill.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Education is one of the most fulfilling and rewarding fields you can enter, but it is not without its challenges. In your most difficult moments, resist the urge to give up. Think of hardship as a storm you are passing through — it will not last forever. Keep your focus on the positive impact you are making in the lives of your students, and let that be what carries you forward.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the greatest challenges we face today is reaching individuals who are navigating grief, anxiety, depression, and unexpected hardship while still trying to maintain a sense of hope and purpose. At the same time, I see enormous opportunity for coaches, educators, and leaders to step into those spaces with authentic support and practical guidance. There is a growing demand for emotional wellness resources and empowerment programs, and for those willing to serve, the opportunity to create real, lasting change has never been greater.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Faith, perseverance, compassion, service, authenticity, and hope are the values that anchor everything I do. I believe in meeting people where they are, helping them recognize the strength they already carry within, and encouraging them to keep moving forward regardless of what life has placed in their path. Integrity and empathy guide how I show up every day, and my greatest measure of success is the meaningful impact I am able to create in the lives of others.
