Her Story

About Gianella

My career path has been quite a journey. I have a degree in biology and worked in the labs at Baylor College of Medicine for about 3 years, but I fell out of love with it. I wanted to be more hands-on and reach more people. During COVID, I got my certification to become a Spanish interpreter and worked in hospitals, but I realized it wasn't for me. I wanted to start completely fresh in something that was unknown to me but came very naturally. I had an opportunity to open up a gym called Corrupted Strength in Stafford with a friend, where I was the general manager handling all operations, including hosting events. After 3 years, the gym had to shut down because the landlord didn't renew our lease, giving us only 2 months notice. After that, I was technically unemployed but knew exactly what I wanted to do. I started doing more events, working with C4 Energy on their experimental marketing team. I realized my true passion is events and event designing, so I started my own business. As a first-generation Latina from Peru who came here when I was young, I found a niche in the wedding industry - providing services directly marketed towards Latino women. I specialize in Latin-focused weddings, though I still do all sorts of events including pop-up events for brands, birthdays, and celebrations. I have a small team I'm building, and I have bookings through 2028. I require my brides to start planning at least 12 months ahead so we have enough time and payments don't build up. I try to have weddings completely planned and executed 6 to 8 weeks from booking to allow time for last-minute changes.

Ten minutes with Gianella

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would say my parents. My parents were very hardworking. They dealt with a lot, and besides all their circumstances and all the odds against them, they still manage to provide such a good lifestyle, or provide such a good life for us. Even during times where they didn't have anything, I know that they gave us everything that they did have. I've watched them just sacrifice everything to be able to give us a better future, and I think that's... I owe everything to them. I wouldn't be the person that I am today if they hadn't left everything behind to come and start a new life for us.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I received was from watching a video of the owner of BPN, which is Bear Performance Nutrition. He mentioned employee retention rates and talked about how it's okay to hire slow and fire fast. I know it sounds very wrong, but he talked about how not every employee is going to be the one for you and your business is gonna benefit you. They may be a great person, but when it comes to just the job itself, not every employee can uphold the standard that that specific role is made out to be. It's okay if that person isn't made out for that, and really disconnect your emotional feelings from the actual business, because that's what really holds you back sometimes.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Never stop learning. Find a mentor, someone that you aspire to be, and keep asking questions. There's... You'll never know if a door will open unless you knock. And just don't let anything stop you. There will be times in people that will not believe in you, but all you can do is just believe in yourself, and that's really... As long as you believe in yourself, you're able to do anything, and you're unstoppable.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenges I would say is just dealing with what we call dead season, and learning how to manage it. Because I'm in such a niche with weddings, usually no one gets married anywhere between like May through August. Because it's summer, a lot of people tend to travel. So for me, it's just a struggle on how I'm able to manage the dead season. What I'm currently doing is just learning how to still be able to attract clientele during the off-season where I can still stay busy. I mean, I know I'm still gonna be busy regardless, but it's just like almost like a standstill where I won't necessarily be doing in-person events for all this time. So then also learning like a healthy balance of learning when to rest too, just because I am the owner of the business and I'm very hands-on and I kind of take on a lot for myself. So using these months to kind of recalibrate and prep myself for a busy quarter three and quarter four.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Honesty, transparency, which I would say falls into honesty, but honesty, transparency, communication, and caring. I think that's one of my core values.
