Her Story

About Gina

I’ve been working in the sports industry since 2018, when I first began my career at West Virginia University. I was a college athlete before an injury sidelined me, but I knew I still wanted to be part of the sports world. I didn't waste any time I jumped into the industry through hands‑on experience and internships. At West Virginia University, I gained exposure across several departments, including sports nutrition, social media, marketing, and ticket sales for Division I events. I also completed a partnerships internship with the West Virginia Black Bears, the minor league affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. From there, I expanded my experience with the Pittsburgh Steelers, supporting marketing, game days, training camp, and youth camps, as well as with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, where I assisted with community relations, partnerships, and marketing. After earning my master’s degree in sports management in 2020, I entered the job market at the height of the COVID‑19 shutdown. With sports paused, I worked in guest services at a local casino, where I managed a team of about 30 employees and oversaw jackpot payouts — a unique experience that strengthened my leadership and operations skills. Once sports resumed, I fully re‑entered the sports industry. The Lakeland Magic offered me my first full‑time role as a Partnership Account Executive, where I managed a book of business and secured new partnerships. I was later promoted to Director of Game Operations and Partnership Activations, overseeing all aspects of game presentation — including live entertainment, production, mascot operations, DJ programming, and our hype team — while managing just under 40 partnership accounts. I also played a key role in relocating the team to become the Osceola Magic, bringing the organization closer to the Orlando Magic and expanding opportunities for growth. As I continued to develop, I realized my passion was in building strategic, meaningful partnerships. That led me to the Orlando Magic, where I first served as a Global Partnership Account Representative before being promoted to Activation Manager. I now oversee several high‑level partnerships and focus on delivering impactful, innovative activations. Although I grew up in Pittsburgh — a city without an NBA team — I’ve found my professional home in basketball. I love the fast‑paced environment, the frequency of games, and the constant touchpoints with partners. My long‑term goal is to continue growing within the NBA, and to keep building partnerships that make a meaningful impact.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute so much of my success to my dad, whose strength, resilience, and unwavering belief in me have shaped every step of my journey. He taught me the value of hard work, humility, and showing up for others — lessons that have guided me through every challenge and opportunity in my career. His support has always been steady, whether he was cheering me on, offering perspective, or reminding me of what I’m capable of. The examples he sets, both in how he lives and how he loves, continues to inspire the way I lead, work, and carry myself every day.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I ever received was from my cousin, who's holds a leadership position in college athletics. She told me the best thing to do was to jump in, hit the ground running, and start doing internships. That advice really shaped my early career because I took it to heart and did many internships at West Virginia University and with various sports teams. Those experiences gave me the foundation I needed to eventually land my role with the Magic and build my career in sports partnerships.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

This industry moves fast, and confidence goes a long way. Seek out mentors who champion you, ask questions without hesitation, and take on opportunities that stretch your skills. Internships and hands‑on experience are incredibly important, but so is building relationships; people remember how you show up, how you communicate, and how you treat others.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The sports industry is full of opportunity right now, especially as teams and brands rethink how they connect with fans and communities. One of the biggest areas of growth is technology and fan engagement. This could be from data‑driven personalization to immersive in‑venue experiences, fans expect more connection than ever, and organizations that innovate here can really stand out. There’s also tremendous opportunity in community impact and youth engagement, as teams increasingly recognize the importance of using their platforms to support wellness, education, and access. Another major area is partnership strategy, where brands are looking for deeper, more meaningful integrations rather than traditional sponsorships. And finally, the industry is expanding its focus on creating space for more voices, perspectives, and talent to shape the future. All of these areas offer exciting possibilities for people entering the field and for organizations ready to evolve.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that matter most to me, both professionally and personally, center around integrity, connection, and growth. I believe in showing up with honesty and consistency, doing what I say I will do, and treating people with respect in every interaction. Building meaningful relationships is also incredibly important to me whether with colleagues, partners, friends, or family, I value trust, communication, and genuine collaboration. And finally, I care deeply about continuous growth. I’m always looking for ways to learn, stretch myself, and evolve, both as a professional and as a person. These values guide how I lead, how I work, and how I navigate life outside the office.
