Her Story

About Gina

Gina Robotham has dedicated nearly 30 years to public health, beginning as a volunteer offering peer support to those newly diagnosed with HIV by discussing their diagnosis and encouraging them to stay in care. She progressed to case management and then to her current role as a communicable disease specialist at the state health department, where she reaches out to notify individuals of HIV or STD infections, educates them about partners and prevention, and promotes enrollment in PrEP services. Her areas of specialization include HIV and STD notification, case management, and public health education. Outside her professional duties, she volunteers with United Barbadians, Obsidians, and a Caribbean heritage association, often participating in food drives. Robotham attributes her success to a combination of mentors, a desire to be more educated, and genuinely enjoying her work, noting that she ultimately works for the community. She advises young women entering the field to get to know the population they serve by understanding their concerns and barriers to accessing services such as family planning, HIV and STD testing, and PrEP.

Ten minutes with Gina

01What do you attribute your success to?

I guess it's a combination of a lot of things. Mentors, wanting to be more educated, and enjoying what I do. If you're working and you're not enjoying what you're doing, you're not really benefiting who you're working for. And even though I work for a company, well, it's a state, but I work for the community.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Get to know your population. Know the people that you're going to be talking to, not necessarily personally, but know what their concerns are. Know what things are barriers for them so that you can better educate them on what things are available for them in public health. I'm finding out, well, what's preventing you from taking advantage of these services? Because some of those services are free. Is it family? Are you in a domestic violence situation?
