What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the people I know. I would not be in half the careers that I've been in without random connections. The best career advice I've ever received is that it's not about what you know, it's who you know, and that is definitely a big thing. Networking is such a big deal - you never know who you're gonna meet and what kind of influences that'll make on your career, whether at the moment or years down the road. For example, I got my job with the military contractor because I called my best friend from college at Troy, and she said her job just literally opened up a position that was remote and would be incredible for me. Then when they decided to move in a different direction, my dad had a connection to Clutch and made the introduction. I was reaching out to her for advice about a couple of job offers I'd gotten, and she said those weren't the best offers and that she had something for me. About a month later, she said they had something, and that's where I'm at now. It's all about connections - sometimes you get lucky and get things on your own, but a lot of times there's a connection somehow.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've ever received is that it's not about what you know, it's who you know. That is definitely a big thing. Networking is such a big deal you never know who you're gonna meet and what kind of influences that'll make on your career, whether at the moment or years down the road. Going back to my St. Jude times, I was interested in writing as a kid, and I actually got the editor of Time Magazine's information as a 13-year-old. Years later, when I went to college, I called him up. Unfortunately, he was retired, but he said that he would be willing to write me a recommendation if I ever wanted it. It was an incredible connection, but again, I was 13 and had no idea I was going into journalism. My mom likes to joke that Marlo Thomas kind of took me under her wing and started bringing me around at that event called The Stars Fell on St. Jude. I met the Senator of Texas, Marlo Thomas, several celebrities, and I was just a confident little kid. That was also when I met Robin Williams.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Don't be afraid to do the odd jobs, you never know the experience you gain when you open yourself up to opportunities you normally wouldn't consider. Don't be afraid to apply for that dream job you don't think you're qualified for, you could be the best candidate. That's how I really kickstarted my career, I applied for Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort as their Social Media Manager and didn't think I would get the job, but they called me 2 hours after the interview and offered me the position, which was double what I was making at that time and that completely changed the trajectory of my career.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Being intentional is most important to me in my work and personal life. My New Year's resolution was to be intentional, intentional in my career, intentional in my food, intentional in general. I think I'm succeeding. I was a little bit not intentional for a little while, but getting back to it has made a big difference in my life. I've gotten into homesteading, actually making my own Kahlua, limoncello, vanilla, that sort of thing. I started growing my own edible garden and such, just very, very basic. It's all about being intentional in everything I do.
