Her Story
About Gladys
My background has been in healthcare and social work. One of my roles was as a program manager for a community health worker program in the border of San Diego and Tijuana at a federally qualified health center. After that, I was a Peace Corps volunteer, serving in the Western Highlands of Guatemala, where we supported the Ministry of Health and Education. Then I was a program manager for a transgender health program, as well as a project manager for a health equity program - very programmatic administrative work. What transitioned me to business consulting was through my MBA program, seeing similarities in accessing business loans that are similar to healthcare barriers. All the same tools apply when it comes to healthcare consulting and small business consulting. I realized that I excel in advisory work, operational excellence, being a thought leader, and also having friends starting their own startups who would recruit me to help them with fractional consulting support. I have my own business now, and I've been doing consulting work for the past 3 years. My main area is definitely strategy and operations. My day-to-day as a business owner includes practicing gratitude in the morning, customer relations management, following up with clients, and planning for our coming year. We've partnered with the LGBTQ Chamber of Massachusetts to do some workshops and training.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I would say now my biggest is just my community supporting me, because without their feedback or guidance, I wouldn't be where I am today.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
It's okay to pivot. I think a lot of us think we have to stay in certain careers, but we don't, and it's okay to take the risk if you're strategic about it. You just have to be strategic about it.
