Her Story

About Griselda

Dr. Griselda Galindo-Vargas is an educational leadership scholar, special education advocate, and nonprofit leader with approximately 30 years of experience in education. Her career has included roles as a bilingual educator, special education teacher, diagnostician, behavior specialist, administrator, assistant principal, and elementary school principal. She earned her PhD in Educational Leadership and Administration from Texas State University, building on her Master of Education in Elementary Education and Teaching from Texas Woman’s University. Her professional journey has been deeply influenced by her commitment to equity, inclusion, and creating meaningful opportunities for individuals with disabilities and their families.

Dr. Galindo-Vargas currently serves as CEO and Director of Buda’s Brightside, a nonprofit organization in Central Texas that provides day habilitation, social skills, life skills, community engagement, and respite opportunities for adults with developmental disabilities. She assumed leadership of the organization in 2023 after initially volunteering with the program. In this role, she oversees curriculum, administration, human resources, fundraising, and program development while helping create inclusive, community-based experiences that promote independence, confidence, and meaningful participation. Her previous leadership as an elementary school principal included advancing bilingual and special education initiatives, supporting diverse learners, and developing innovative community-centered educational programs.

As a scholar and researcher, Dr. Galindo-Vargas focuses on postsecondary transition and lifespan services for individuals with developmental disabilities, particularly the “service cliff” that can occur when students leave the PreK–12 education system and later encounter gaps in adult services. Her research interests include nonprofit leadership, disability services, Community Cultural Wealth, culturally responsive leadership, bilingual education, and equity-centered systems change. She is committed to preparing future leaders through teaching, mentorship, research, and community engagement, and has presented nationally on Latina leadership, inclusive education, trauma-informed practices, and culturally responsive leadership. Her work reflects a strong belief that educational and community systems should extend beyond the classroom to support individuals and families throughout the lifespan.

Ten minutes with Griselda

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute much of my success to the women mentors who have supported, guided, and inspired me throughout my journey. Their wisdom, encouragement, and example have helped me grow both personally and professionally. They have challenged me to believe in my abilities, embrace opportunities, and continue striving for excellence.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is to always do what is best for the people I serve. Whether working as an educator or in the nonprofit sector, I believe my role is to put the needs, growth, and well-being of others at the center of my work. Staying focused on service, impact, and making a meaningful difference has guided my decisions throughout my career.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering my industry is to be authentic, stay true to yourself, and recognize your own value. You do not have to change who you are to succeed. Trust your strengths, embrace your unique perspective, and have the confidence to know that your voice and contributions matter.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Being supportive is one of the most important values in both my work and personal life. I believe in encouraging others, being present when people need guidance, and creating an environment where everyone feels valued and empowered. Supporting others not only strengthens relationships but also helps create a culture of trust, collaboration, and mutual growth.
