Gunjan Khanna
I'm a mid-level project manager in the energy utility industry, where I've been working for almost 3 plus years, with nearly a year in my current role. My background is actually in English literature, which doesn't match what I'm doing now, but when I started as a project coordinator in the utility industry in 2021, I realized I wanted to pursue project management. That led me to complete my PMP certification in 2024, which was my biggest achievement. My day-to-day work involves running projects, budgeting, site walk downs, talking to different stakeholders, and weekly cadence calls. Safety and compliance are paramount in our industry, so I conduct frequent safety observations and site visits, going out to the field at least one day a week to see how projects are progressing and ensure workers are following all safety guidelines. I love being able to see my projects come to life right in front of me, unlike IT or technology projects. I'm most proud of handling different types of stakeholders and getting things done while keeping people safe. As a woman of color, I'm very proud of standing on the roads with my hard hat, pursuing my dreams despite any barriers.

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Never let your race, caste, or being a woman stop you and get it, like pursuing your dreams. I'm very proud of being a woman of color, standing on the roads with my hard hat with all those men. You can do it.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I would say being honest, even if you have made a mistake, just be honest and own up to your mistake, and clear communication. These are the values that matter most to me in both my work and personal life.
