Her Story

About Gwen

Gwen Johnson is a nonprofit leader, human resources professional, and civil rights advocate whose career has been defined by a commitment to justice, equity, and community empowerment. As the founder and CEO of the S.H.A.R.P. Foundation (Society Harmonizing Against Racial Profiling and Society Harmonizing and Rallying for Peace), she transformed a deeply personal family experience into a mission to support individuals whose civil rights have been violated. Established in 2018, the foundation works to combat racial profiling, promote peace, advocate for victims of injustice, and foster stronger relationships between communities, law enforcement, faith-based organizations, and public institutions. Guided by the belief that every individual deserves dignity and equal protection under the law, Johnson has become a respected voice in grassroots advocacy and systemic reform. Alongside her nonprofit leadership, Johnson serves as Senior Operations People Manager in Cook County, where she helps shape the employee experience for an organization serving hundreds of employees and thousands of residents through programs focused on housing, energy assistance, Weatherization services, WIC services, financial literacy, and youth employment. Her background also includes over 27 years in human resources and recruiting roles with Boulevard Temple, Kelly Services and Higher Staffing and Recruiting Services, giving her extensive expertise in talent acquisition, leader and development, organizational development, employee engagement, and nonprofit operations. Throughout her career, she has championed the philosophy that transparency, trust, integrity, and doing the right thing are the cornerstones of effective leadership. Johnson's impact extends beyond organizational leadership through her advocacy, public speaking, and community partnerships. Working alongside municipalities, public safety agencies, churches, and grassroots organizations, she strives to bridge divides and create lasting solutions that promote justice and opportunity. Her dedication to community transformation has earned recognition, including the Community Transformation Award from the Pulse Institute in Detroit. Whether leading the S.H.A.R.P. Foundation, overseeing people operations, or mentoring the next generation through youth-focused initiatives, Gwen Johnson continues to inspire meaningful change by turning personal adversity into a lifelong commitment to justice and hope.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Gwen

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to God first, whose guidance gives me the strength, wisdom and purpost to serve others along with the incredible people who have walked this journey with me. The support of my family, community partners, and community residents has inspired me to continue advocating for justice, peace, and positive change. My success is not mine alone—it belongs to everyone who has chosen to stand for justice, peace, equitable and stronger communities. Every success is a reflection of what we can accomplish when we work together.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

One of the most meaningful pieces of advice I've received is, "Serve people with humility and let your work speak for itself." Recognition may come and go, but if you stay focused on serving others with compassion and integrity, your impact will last far beyond any title or position.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would encourage young women to believe in the value of their voice and never underestimate the impact they can have. Lead with integrity, stay connected to the people you serve, and don't be discouraged by obstacles. Be willing to listen, collaborate, and keep learning. When your work is rooted in purpose and service, you can create meaningful change and inspire others to do the same.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I think the biggest challenge is balancing urgency with patience. People deserve to see their concerns addressed, and as an advocate, you want to help make that happen. At the same time, real, lasting change takes time, collaboration, and persistence. I've learned that you have to keep listening, keep building relationships, and keep showing up. Even when progress is slow, every conversation and every step forward helps build a stronger, more connected community.

The biggest opportunity is being able to help change the lives of people for the good of the people.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity, faith, compassion, service, respect, and accountability are the values that guide both my personal and professional life. I believe in leading by example, listening to others with empathy, building trusting relationships, and working collaboratively to create positive change. No matter the role I serve in, I strive to act with honesty, treat people with dignity, and remain committed to making a meaningful difference in my community.
