Her Story
About Gwen
I've been in education for 26 years, my entire adult career. After graduating from college, I knew I wanted to be an educator. I had the heart to help, and my help was in reading to try to get kids who couldn't read, to be able to read. That's been my journey ever since. I've moved up from being a teacher, to an instructional coach, to a reading coach, from a dyslexia teacher to an interventionist, to the position that I'm in now, where I'm actually covering the district. It's all to help grow readers. If I can touch one kid, and they become a better reader, and they grow from one year to the next, then I've done my job. I've been in my current position for about 6 years, and my most notable achievement is increasing the district that I'm in from 16% to 32%. I've doubled the amount since I've been in this position, and that's a really proud moment for me.

01What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Family is very important to me. I spend time with my one grandkid who just turned one, and I love to spend time with my church and my church organization. I help the teens and the youth in our church, as well as the women's ministry. That's where I find joy. Whenever I have an off time, and it really should be for me, I find ways to help someone else. I had the heart to help, and if I can touch one kid and they become a better reader and they grow from one year to the next, then I've done my job.
