Her Story

About Gwendolyn

Gwendolyn Miller is a self-published children's book writer based in Sherwood, Arkansas, who has been building her writing career since 2019. A graduate of Calumet College of St. Joseph in Whiting, Indiana, where she earned a bachelor's degree in Communication in 1980, Miller's professional path took her through roles as a speech and communications teacher in Gary Public Schools, a contributor to small newspapers such as the Southern Mediator and the Good News Newspaper, and eventually an Supervisor clerk with UPS Freight, from which she retired after many years of service. It was not until later in life, inspired by her grandchildren, that she found her true calling in storytelling for young readers. Since beginning her writing journey, Miller has authored and published titles including Moose the Mouse, Kitty the Kitten and the Clown Who Frowns, and Moose the Mouse Likes to Run, in addition to a personalized book written for her granddaughter, “But, I’ve Never Been 4 Before”. Her third Children’s Book in the Moose the Mouse series will be published in September 2026. She is currently at work on her debut novel, Trouble Waters, and remains an active participant in the Butterfly Typeface writers' group, led by her publisher, Iris Williams. Her creative recognition has extended beyond the page: she was invited to record a book reading for a PBS station in Conway, Arkansas, later shared on PBS's YouTube channel, and had one of her books read on air by local newscaster Craig O'Neill, whose segment captured children's live reactions to her story. Beyond her writing, Miller is deeply committed to her community and her faith, volunteering with the youth group at her church and drawing on her Christian values to guide both her personal and professional life. She credits much of her success to the unwavering support of her late husband, her publisher, and her children, and hopes to inspire other aspiring writers — particularly young women — to trust their own voices, embrace their imagination, and never give up on telling their stories.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Gwendolyn

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the people who believed in me — my husband, who was my biggest cheerleader, my publisher Iris Williams, and my children, all of whom gave me the courage and support to keep writing.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I've ever received is to never give up, to know that I am worthy and important, and to remember that I mean something. My publisher also encouraged me to simply tell my story without over-worrying about the details.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would tell young women to write what they feel and to be comfortable in what they write. Write what you know, trust your own imagination and voice, and don't let anyone tell you that you're not a writer.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge in my field right now is getting your book noticed, especially as a self-published author working with limited budget and resources for promotion. At the same time, that same visibility creates opportunity — recognition can lead to appearances and broader exposure, such as being featured on PBS or read aloud on local television.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Believing in God, treating others as I wish to be treated, and having love and respect for everyone are the values most important to me in both my work and personal life.
