Her Story

About Hadiza

Hadiza Abubakar is a doctoral researcher in economics and a public administration professional whose work is driven by a passion for improving financial well-being through research, coaching, and community engagement. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Economics at Texas Tech University, where she serves as a Research Assistant with Academic Innovation & Student Success (AISS). Through the university's Peer Financial Coaching Program, she contributes to one-on-one financial coaching, educational workshops, and outreach initiatives that empower students and families to make informed financial decisions and build long-term financial resilience.

Before beginning her doctoral studies, Hadiza dedicated more than 13 years to public service with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), where she advanced to the position of Assistant Manager of Administration. In that role, she managed administrative operations, coordinated budgeting and personnel records, supported employee welfare initiatives, and contributed to the effective management of organizational resources. This experience strengthened her leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills while reinforcing her commitment to serving others.

Hadiza holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics from Ahmadu Bello University, Nigeria, a Master of Science in Economics from the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom, and a Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from Texas Tech University. Her academic journey across Africa, Europe, and North America has broadened her perspective and deepened her interest in the economic and behavioral factors that shape financial decision-making.

Her research centers on household finance, behavioral economics, financial capability, and consumer financial behavior, with a focus on understanding — and ultimately improving — how individuals and families navigate financial vulnerability.

Guided by the values of honesty, integrity, and confidentiality, Hadiza believes research should extend beyond academic publications to deliver practical solutions that improve people's lives. She is passionate about promoting financial literacy, encouraging open conversations about personal finance, and inspiring others — particularly women and young professionals — to pursue education, embrace lifelong learning, and use knowledge to create positive change in their communities.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Hadiza

01What do you attribute your success to?

Hadiza credits much of her inspiration to her father, a retired chartered accountant. His dedication to public service, integrity, and professional excellence inspired her to pursue economics and instilled in her a lifelong commitment to learning, service, and making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Dream boldly, work diligently, and never give up. My journey has taught me that success is not defined by the absence of challenges but by the determination to keep moving forward. Every obstacle is an opportunity to learn, grow, and become better prepared for the future. Believe in your potential, stay committed to your goals, and never stop learning.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women is to invest in your education, believe in your potential, and never let cultural expectations limit your ambitions. Education opens doors, builds confidence, and creates opportunities to make a lasting impact. Every girl deserves the chance to pursue her dreams, become a leader in her chosen field, and contribute meaningfully to her family, community, and nation.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the greatest challenges in my field is breaking the stigma around talking about money. Too often, people treat financial struggles as something to hide, which keeps them from seeking guidance or planning ahead — and by the time many do ask for help, they're already in hardship. I believe promoting financial literacy, encouraging open conversations about personal finance, and empowering people to plan ahead are essential steps toward building financial resilience in individuals, families, and communities.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Honesty, integrity, and confidentiality are the principles that guide every aspect of my life. Whether I am conducting research, providing financial coaching, collaborating with colleagues, or interacting with family and friends, I believe that trust, respect, and ethical conduct are essential. I strive to lead by example, knowing that true success is measured not only by professional achievements but also by the positive impact we have on the lives of others.
