About Hajra

Hajra Hussain is an accomplished architectural and structural engineer with approximately 35 years of experience in the engineering and construction industry. Inspired from a young age to pursue a career in engineering, she initially aspired to become an aeronautical engineer before choosing civil engineering with a specialization in architectural and structural design. She earned her bachelor's degree in architecture engineering with distinction and has built a successful career designing, evaluating, and overseeing building projects, finding great fulfillment in transforming concepts into durable, functional structures. She is also a member of the National Council of Structural Engineering Associates, reflecting her commitment to professional excellence and industry standards.

Throughout her career, Hajra has earned a reputation for her technical expertise, strong work ethic, and unwavering dedication to her profession. She attributes her success to hard work, perseverance, and a commitment to continuous learning. While engineering has traditionally been a male-dominated field, she has successfully navigated challenges related to gender expectations on construction sites by demonstrating confidence, professionalism, and technical competence. Her ability to lead by example has enabled her to build credibility and foster productive working relationships across diverse project teams.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Hajra is committed to giving back to her community through her involvement with the Red Cross and organizations focused on water-related initiatives. She believes that respect, compassion, organization, and punctuality are the core values that guide both her personal and professional life. Passionate about encouraging the next generation of women professionals, she advises young women to pursue careers that genuinely inspire them rather than following external expectations, believing that true success comes from choosing meaningful work and dedicating oneself wholeheartedly to it.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Hajra

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to hard work, dedication, and a strong commitment to consistently giving my best in everything I do. I believe that perseverance, a disciplined work ethic, and a willingness to continuously learn and improve have been the driving forces behind my professional growth and accomplishments.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering any industry is to choose a career that genuinely interests and fulfills them rather than pursuing a profession based solely on external expectations or financial rewards. I have always encouraged my own daughters to follow the paths they are most passionate about because when you enjoy what you do, you are naturally more motivated to work hard, continue learning, and strive for excellence. One of my daughters became a physician because of her passion for helping others, and it has allowed her to thrive in a career that aligns with her values. My other daughter is still exploring her options, and I remind her that it is perfectly fine to take the time to discover what truly feels right. When you choose a profession you love, success and opportunities will follow through your dedication, commitment, and genuine enthusiasm for your work.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the ongoing challenges in my field is overcoming the assumptions and stereotypes that can still exist in engineering and construction environments. After many years in the industry, I have found that some people expect to see a male engineer leading projects and providing technical direction. As a woman, I have occasionally encountered individuals who are initially skeptical of my expertise or leadership, particularly on job sites. While the majority of professionals I work with are respectful, collaborative, and highly professional, there are times when I must navigate more difficult personalities and earn credibility through my knowledge, confidence, and performance. These experiences have reinforced the importance of resilience, professionalism, and leading by example, while also highlighting the opportunity to pave the way for more women to succeed in the industry.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that guide both my professional and personal life are respect, compassion, and discipline. I believe that treating others with respect should always come first, followed by showing kindness and genuine care in every interaction. I also value being organized, punctual, and proactive by planning ahead and managing my time effectively. Maintaining these principles helps me build strong relationships, stay accountable, and consistently perform at my best in both my career and personal life.
