Her Story

About Haley

Haley Gill serves as practice manager for one of the locations in oral surgery. She began her career in the field in 2015 after earning a bachelor's degree in exercise science in 2014, initially aspiring to become a physical therapist and working as a hospital tech. Finding that path unsuitable, she pursued dental assistant training at night and transitioned into oral surgery as a surgery assistant. After having her first daughter, she advanced to office manager based on her demonstrated strengths and later took on her current role, stepping down from regional support leader to focus on family. Gill emphasizes patient care as her top priority, striving to ensure comfort in an environment where patients often feel apprehensive. She credits her success to a drive to improve healthcare and attributes key career advice to taking risks, noting that the worst outcome is returning to one's current position. Gill advises young professionals to learn continuously, remain open to growth, and avoid assuming complete knowledge, as healthcare and insurance landscapes constantly evolve.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Haley

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would say just having a drive to make the world a better place, make healthcare a better place, and making sure patients are comfortable and have a good experience. Patient care is my number one goal for the last 11 years that I've been in this role. I want to make sure someone feels comfortable, because no one wants to be referred to an oral surgeon's office.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Go for it. What's the worst that can happen? You're back in the same position that you're already in. Why not take your knowledge and just go for your goals?

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Learn as much as you can. The more you learn, and the more people you learn from, you can put all of that together and just be a vast of knowledge for future people coming in. You're never done learning. So always never act like you know everything. Because there's always room to learn and grow. Insurances change, healthcare is always changing as well, so you're never going to know everything, so you need to be open and willing to learn and listen.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I would say getting in the door. So don't stop. It's when you're fresh out of dental assisting school, a lot of providers just do want someone with some experience to come in, because as doctors themselves, they're still having to provide for patients, so they're wanting someone that they can go ahead and rely on.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Patience. My biggest thing is understanding, so don't judge someone too quickly on decisions that they're making. Take the time to figure out why they made that decision and kind of their thought process. I think that's helped understandable, so much more.
