Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I would say relationships. I was always taught to never burn bridges, and the old saying, it's all about who you know. Through being at Baker for 9 years, and working with so many of our offices through our National Accounts program, and now working with so many people in our community through Raleigh and the Triad Markets, it's been the relationships, and it's been the people. While I'd love to take credit for everything, I wouldn't be where I am in my career without the people that have helped me get there. Todd Cavanaugh, who's now our Vice President of Marketing, was who took a chance on me and hired me at Baker. I had no experience, and was really underqualified. Making meaningful relationships, and staying in touch with people, and showing up to events, and being a part of company things, and going to things in our community - it's been everything for my career. Really specifically just learning from people, and not always being right, and when you weren't right, learning from that, and pivoting.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

People won't always remember what you did, but they will always remember the way you made them feel.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Be bold.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I would say that the construction industry is growing rapidly, and that there is a need for women more now than ever. When I first started 9 years ago, you didn't see a lot of women on the roof, or women estimators, or women in sales, and now they're everywhere. Specifically in roofing, we're always going to need roofs. It's not going to go out of style - that's something that every time you build a building, there's got to be something on top of it. And so, there's a huge need for that in our industry. The opportunities to grow are significant - we promote from within, and I find that most all construction companies do that. The biggest hurdles are just that construction's not perfect, and dealing with the punches as they come, and being able to, when things don't go right, being able to fix them. Roofing is not glamorous in the fact that most of the time when people call you, it's because they have a problem, and so really just being able to manage people's emotions and expectations.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Family is huge for me, which is another thing that I think has kept me at Baker Roofing. It really is one big family. I'm also a very Christ-centered person. I do believe that everything comes through Jesus Christ, and he is the strength and the center of my family, and what keeps us whole. I've stayed rooted in those values, and being a good person is not about the things that you say, but the way that you treat people, and being a good person has taken me a long way.
