Her Story

About Hannah

Hannah Hanley is an interior designer based in Phoenix who is currently studying interior architecture in a graduate program. She graduated with an environmental design degree in 2021 and previously worked as a partnership coordinator for the National Forest, where she handled environmental work and some design tasks. After being laid off, she decided to pursue design more fully and began applying to graduate programs at the beginning of last year. She secured her first interior design client in the spring and has since worked on fulfilling projects while balancing school and building her business, including part-time work in furniture retail. One notable achievement includes winning an innovation award alongside her supervisor for a non-profit program that used influencers to promote government messaging on best practices for public lands. Hannah attributes her success to her ambition and ability to enter a meditative flow state during design work, appreciating the iterative and experimental nature of the process. She emphasizes positive self-talk and the personal mantra that her life is designed for success. Her core values are curiosity and collaboration, which she applies by asking thoughtful questions, delegating effectively, and celebrating team members' unique skills. She advises young women entering the field to be authentic, clarify their values and creative expression, invest in themselves, and show up consistently to stand out in a competitive market.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Hannah

01What do you attribute your success to?

I just get really ambitious. I definitely get in the flow state with design. It can become meditative once I get into the zone in a project. Design is an iterative process, and I like to test and try different things as an experimental person.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

I'm really big on positive self-talk and affirmations. Always believing in myself. The quote 'your life is designed for you to succeed' is a moniker for me, especially as a designer.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Really be yourself. Get clear on your own values and creative expression. Invest in yourself. Keep showing up with authenticity because people want more authenticity and something unique.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Challenges include a crazy job market with many interview rounds during career transition. Opportunities in Phoenix with a huge commercial industry and many new-build homes.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Top two are curiosity and collaboration. Lead with curiosity in designing and relationships to ask the right questions and stay open. Collaboration means delegating, celebrating unique skills, and working with synergy.
