Her Story

About Hannah

Hannah Shockey serves as New Construction Operations Manager in the roofing industry. With nine years of experience, she has spent the past three years at her current company, initially as a project coordinator before advancing to operations manager about a year ago. In this role, she manages scheduling for roof installations, coordinates with crews, follows up on labor issues and invoices, orders materials, and oversees budgets for ongoing projects. Prior to this, she worked for seven years at another roofing company, beginning in a call center position and progressing through various roles. She holds a high school diploma and earned a veterinary assistant certificate from a technical college, which helped build skills in public speaking and computer applications. Shockey attributes her success to being detail-oriented and organized, noting that she follows through on tasks to maintain company standards. She advises young women entering the male-dominated roofing industry to learn technical aspects, remain confident and consistent, and demonstrate their value to gain team receptiveness.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Hannah

01What do you attribute your success to?

I think it just goes back to being very detail-oriented. That's one thing anybody that works with me will say, that regardless of what position I'm in, whether I'm just answering the phone or I'm doing a managerial position, then I'm very detail-oriented. If you tell me something, I'm gonna keep bugging you about it until you finish it, because that looks bad on the company if you don't, so I'm gonna stay on you. So I think just being very detail-oriented and organized has really helped.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would definitely say that, you know, you're gonna have to learn all the technical stuff on the backside. I still, of course, don't know all the technical stuff, but as long as you're confident in what you say, and consistent in what you say, and showing what value you do bring to the team, a lot of times the guys are more receptive and actually start listening and coming to you for advice. So as long as you're confident and, like I said, just staying consistent, you typically can win them over.
