Her Story
About Harika
Harika Pothina is a Performance Engineer at Red Hat, where she has worked for approximately eight to nine months optimizing large language models and vision language models across NVIDIA GPUs and Intel CPUs. With nearly seven years in the performance domain, her expertise centers on AI performance engineering, systems optimization, and AI inference performance, building on earlier experience in low-level systems engineering that included performance optimization, memory management, power optimization, and system software. This foundation provided her with deep knowledge of computer architecture, operating systems, and hardware-software interactions. Among her achievements, Harika received a Best Paper Award at the International Astronautical Congress in Dubai for her work on navigation and rendezvous guidance of six DOF robotic manipulators with the Indian Space Research Organization. She has also contributed to MLPERF inference submissions at Red Hat. Harika attributes her success to persistence, continuous learning, and curiosity, emphasizing the importance of understanding problems deeply. She values ownership, collaboration, and integrity in her work and advises young women entering the field to confidently pursue new opportunities.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Harika
01What do you attribute your success to?
I would attribute my success to a combination of being persistent and a willingness to continuously learn. It's mostly about curiosity, persistence, and continuous learning. I'm someone who likes to understand problems deeply rather than just applying quick fixes. My work in performance engineering often requires a lot of experimentation and patience, and I enjoy that process. I also make it a point to keep learning as technology evolves, which has helped me grow and take on more challenging work.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
My best career advice is always be curious. You know, always understand why, not just how. That keeps me driving at every problem I solve.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
For young women in this particular industry, I would say to always be 100% ready to take on new opportunities. Don't underestimate your abilities or wait until you feel 100% ready. Just take new opportunities. Always feel confident. It's all about having the zen to learn new stuff, the curiosity, that will definitely keep anybody growing.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
In my field there are several exciting opportunities especially in AI performance engineering over the next few years. One major area is optimizing inference for increasingly larger and more complex AI problems. As models continue to grow there's a strong need to improve latency throughput and cost efficiency while maintaining accuracy. Another opportunity is hardware-software co-optimization. All these new AI accelerators and GPUs are being introduced rapidly and there's significant potential to optimize frameworks compilers and inference engines to fully utilize the underlying hardware.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
My values in work life are mostly ownership continuous learning collaboration and integrity. These are extremely helpful and a driving factor at work.
