Her Story
About Haylee
I've been in travel sales for about 4 years, working as a senior sales consultant on the international team at World Strides. I achieved this senior position after just 2 years by exceeding my revenue target of $1.2 million. My journey into travel sales came from teaching in Maine during the pandemic. While I loved teaching and working with students, I knew I wanted to try something different given how the pandemic affected education. The transition felt risky since I didn't know if sales would suit me, but after early success, I realized it was the right decision. Now I get to work with teachers from the other side, helping get students access to travel, plus I have the flexibility to live in different cities and go on trips with groups. In my role, I focus on all new clients, doing cold calling in the mornings and afternoons to reach teachers during planning periods, following up on leads, and guiding teachers through the entire process from picking a tour to promoting it and getting students enrolled. I was named Rookie of the Year in fiscal year 2023 after exceeding my enrollment targets by over 200% in the fall and 140% in the spring, and within half a year after that, I became a senior consultant.

Ten minutes with Haylee
01What do you attribute your success to?
I didn't know if sales would really be something for me, but I think just because I love travel, and I believe in the product, and trying to get students this access to see the world, making these calls and reaching out to teachers doesn't feel as much like a burden on the day-to-day. It's more like, if we do have a chance to talk, I'd love to, because I think you would love it, and I think your students would too. So it definitely keeps me motivated. I also think that knowing when you clock in and doing the best you can by trying to hit the outreach that you need to, and knowing that you did the best before you clock out, has been helpful. Like, I did all I could that day, hopefully tomorrow could be better. That's been the best advice when you're feeling down, just knowing you did all that you could that day, and you'll try to make up for it the next day.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've received is that, because sometimes the day-to-days, you want people to respond to you and they don't always do, it's just knowing that when you clock in and doing the best you can by trying to hit the outreach that you need to, and knowing that you did the best before you clock out, has been helpful. To know, like, I did all I could that day, hopefully tomorrow could be better. I think that's the best advice when you're feeling down, and just knowing, like, you did all that you could that day, and you'll try to make up for it the next day.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would say that being in this industry, and maybe they come from teaching like me, maybe they don't, but there's a lot of flexibility. So, where you live, you have a lot of flexibility if you want to change cities. You also get the chance to travel a good portion. Like, I think three to four times a year I'm traveling for this job, so if you want to see the world, like, that's amazing. I think it really expands your horizon, and it's a field where you feel good for what you're trying to sell and share with people. So if someone else wanted to get into it, I'd be like, this is one of the best decisions I made going from teaching and doing this.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I would say right now, maybe economy might be the most, because even though it's something that I believe in and would want all students to be a part of, the financial barrier's probably the biggest hurdle. There are ways around that, like trying to get people to promote early so they can make the monthly payments more affordable, and different ways to fundraise and get, like, different scholarships. But that's probably the biggest barrier.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I would say travel is a value, which is why I'm in this field. That's something I'm very passionate about. I love being a trusted advisor when it comes to this role specifically. I love working with people and making sure that they're making the best decision for them, too. I never want someone to feel forced into making a decision. It's always up to them. I would just say just being open and honest, and just giving them all the information up front. When they work with different vendors, sometimes all the information isn't in front of them, and it's better just to tell them everything up front so they can make the most educated decision for them.
