Her Story

About Hazel

Hazel Cerra, MBA, CISM, is the Director of Digital Security Convergence at BLACKCLOAK, where she leads the intersection of cybersecurity, executive protection, and enterprise risk. With more than 25 years of distinguished service as a Special Agent with the U.S. Secret Service, she built a career dedicated to protecting high-profile individuals, including presidential protection details for President Bill Clinton, while also investigating complex cyber-enabled financial crimes. Her expertise includes network intrusion response, critical systems protection, cryptocurrency investigations, and protective intelligence operations, with a focus on translating federal-level methodologies into modern digital security strategies.

Her career in public service began over 27 years ago following her studies in criminal justice at Jersey City University and early investigative work with the Attorney General’s Office. She went on to serve in progressively senior leadership roles within the U.S. Secret Service, including Assistant to the Special Agent in Charge in Philadelphia and later Resident Agent in Charge in Atlantic City. In these roles, she led multidisciplinary teams responsible for executive protection operations, cyber investigations, and strategic partnerships with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.

Today, at BLACKCLOAK, Hazel serves as a thought leader in Digital Executive Protection, focusing on safeguarding executives’ digital footprints and mitigating emerging threats such as impersonation attacks, deepfakes, and personal cyber exposure. She actively engages in speaking opportunities and industry forums, helping organizations understand the convergence of physical and digital risk while connecting enterprises with experienced former law enforcement professionals. She holds an MBA in Finance from The Johns Hopkins University Carey Business School and is a Certified Information Security Manager (CISM), recognized for her leadership in advancing modern approaches to executive and digital security.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Hazel

01What do you attribute your success to?

She attributes her success to a 27-year career built on continuous learning, disciplined service, and a commitment to protecting others. Beginning with her studies in criminal justice at Jersey City University and later earning her MBA from The Johns Hopkins University, she established a strong academic foundation that supported her advancement through increasingly complex roles in federal law enforcement. During her 26 years with the U.S. Secret Service, she gained extensive experience in presidential protection, cyber-enabled fraud investigations, and cryptocurrency-related financial crimes, ultimately rising to leadership positions as Assistant to the Special Agent in Charge in Philadelphia and Resident Agent in Charge in Atlantic City. Her professional growth has been further strengthened by advanced credentials, including the Certified Information Security Manager (CISM) certification from ISACA, recognition such as Security Magazine’s Woman in Security Award, and her current role at BLACKCLOAK, where she continues to serve as a thought leader in digital executive protection.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice she has ever received is that hard work, consistency, and integrity will always pay off over time. She has lived this principle throughout her 27-year career journey, beginning with investigative work at the Attorney General’s Office and continuing through 26 years of service with the U.S. Secret Service, where she supported presidential protection operations and specialized in cyber-enabled financial crimes and advanced investigations. While building her federal law enforcement career, she remained committed to continuous learning, earning a degree in criminal justice from Jersey City University, completing her MBA in Finance at The Johns Hopkins University, and obtaining advanced professional certifications including CISM from ISACA and the Carnegie Mellon CISO program. This combination of experience, education, and perseverance has shaped her leadership approach and reinforced her belief that sustained effort and lifelong learning create long-term success.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Her advice to young women entering the industry is to lead with integrity, stay resilient, and consistently advocate for others, even when it is not the easiest path. Throughout her career, she has remained committed to advancing fairness and recognition within law enforcement, including advocating for a female officer who was killed in the line of duty and ensuring her contributions were properly acknowledged after being previously overlooked for a Valor Award. She believes that true leadership is defined by the willingness to stand up for others and uphold what is right, even in challenging circumstances. Her own journey has been shaped by this mindset, along with recognition such as a U.S. Attorney’s Office award for her role in a successful investigation and prosecution, as well as the 2026 Security Magazine Woman in Security Award, all of which reinforce her belief in service, accountability, and lifting others as you rise.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenges and opportunities in her field today center on the rapid convergence of cybersecurity, executive protection, and personal digital risk, as adversaries increasingly target individuals beyond the traditional enterprise perimeter through personal devices, home networks, and digital identities. In her current role at BLACKCLOAK, she focuses on addressing these evolving threats by advancing digital executive protection strategies, strengthening awareness of emerging risks such as impersonation attacks and deepfakes, and helping organizations understand how personal vulnerabilities can translate into enterprise-level exposure. She also works to bridge the gap between corporate security programs and real-world protective intelligence by leveraging her federal law enforcement background and connecting organizations with experienced former agents and security professionals. While early in her tenure at BLACKCLOAK following a 26-year career with the U.S. Secret Service, she is actively expanding her impact as a thought leader and contributing to the advancement of more holistic, people-centered approaches to security.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to her in both her professional and personal life are service, integrity, hard work, and making a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Throughout her career, she has remained committed to advocacy and fairness, including ensuring appropriate recognition for a female officer who lost her life in the line of duty and was subsequently honored with a Valor Award, reflecting her belief in standing up for others and ensuring justice and acknowledgment where it is due. Equally important to her is family; as a single mother of three sons, she is deeply engaged in their lives as a dedicated “sports mom,” balancing a demanding professional career with active involvement in their growth, development, and everyday milestones. This balance has strengthened her resilience, sense of purpose, and commitment to living fully while making a positive impact in both her personal and professional spheres.
