She began teaching fitness and yoga shortly after graduating from East Carolina University in 1995 with a BFA in Dance, and later became a studio owner and entrepreneur. She co-founded and operated Cary Yoga Collective and as a studio owner for five years, helped establish a welcoming community centered on yoga, mindfulness, movement, and personal well-being. Her Interview

Ten minutes with Heather

01What do you attribute your success to?

My father was an incredibly hard worker who loved his community, loved helping people and loved spending time with his family. His work ethic and dedication to loved ones, along with all who needed help around him have inspired my career choices and my drive to keep working towards goals while making time to enjoy the people and things that matter most.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

To lean on your team. One of my favorite business books is How Winning Works, written by Robyn Benincasa, a three-time eco challenge winner on the value of relying on the strengths of those around you to succeed. No one can do it all alone - we are always stronger together.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Across the board, there's a long-standing statistic that 87% of Realtors are out of the business within two years. Longevity and success is driven by consistent sales training provided by firms for agents - which is sometimes hard to find. Often firms provide vendor, contractor or transactional training but little sales training - and this is a sales business. You also have to love people to be in this industry, and ride the waves of helping them emotionally and handling hiccups transactionally while they make the biggest purchase of their lives. It's important to remember as a part of a firm and team, you are still a 1099 employee and a small business owner. You have to treat it as a small business - not a hobby - with the motivation, systems, training, and investment needed to flourish.

As a yoga and wellness entrepreneur, I've learned to put service and people first. You can't grow your business and expand your reach without the needs of people you serve at the forefront. It should be part of your mission, your motto and your vision.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The last two years have been particularly tough in real estate, with fewer sales per agent nationally. In fact, many agents have only closed 1-4 sales over the past year. Between the economy and interest rates, it is super important to have good systems in place to respond to leads, grow your sphere and enhance your marketing efforts.

In the wellness space, we have become saturated with online options to focus on our wellbeing. From apps to coaching and online classes, both paid and free, people have a plethora of choices to meet their goals. In the small business space, national fitness, pilates and yoga chains have changed the game for local, long-standing studio owners. Again, success comes back to your community relationships, your variety of offerings, your dedication to service and specialties. It's about honing in on your expertise and listening to what people around you want and need.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Service, dedication, drive, vision, balance, love and peace.
