About Heather

My day-to-day involves lots of networking and follow-up on referrals. I spend my time completing applications and educating my prospective clients on what type of policies would be most suitable for themselves or their families. Sometimes it's individuals, sometimes it's families. It's about educating them on what would work best for them and finding something that's going to be efficient for them. I do all of my own admin work and calls - I work by myself without a team. What I'm really focused on is helping clients understand that it's more than just life insurance I'm assisting them with, but more for generational wealth for their families. Right now, I have about 8 or 9 out of state licenses, and my goal is to have all 50 states licensed eventually, with a target of December of this year. I also work for Sentara Healthcare, a not-for-profit company where I've been for over 15 years, and I'm working to become a patient advocate.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say that you definitely have to be a people person. Someone who doesn't mind going and starting a conversation, creating a nice breaker. You have to be someone who shows empathy, because there are a lot of people who are dealing with a lot of just... a lot of things that's happening in life, so you have to be someone that's willing to listen. And someone who's definitely willing to put in the time, because it is a job that requires a lot of your energy. You would definitely have to be someone willing to commit to the hours that it'll take. You have to be willing to be available - you may have talked to someone who may call and say, okay, I'm ready, and it might be 8 o'clock at night. So someone who's willing to make the sacrifice with their time.
