About Heather
Heather Demarco serves as an Administrator in the ambulatory surgery center setting. With just over 14 years in the field, she began her career as a nurse in the pre-op area of an ambulatory surgery center, where she quickly developed a passion for patient care. Demarco advanced through the recovery area and into the operating room, focusing on orthopedics, before moving into leadership positions as charge nurse, manager, nurse manager, and director of nursing. She later earned an MBA concentrating in healthcare administration, which supported her transition to the business side of operations as an administrator. Her expertise centers on ambulatory surgery and making such care attainable and affordable. Demarco is a member of AORN and credits her success to her experience along with the wonderful mentors she encountered throughout her journey.

01What do you attribute your success to?
Certainly my experience, but really to the wonderful mentors I had along the way.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Try everything. Learn everything. Be involved. Get on every committee you can. Shadow everybody. Ask the questions. Don't be afraid. And just really absorb everything and anything you can.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
It's both a challenge and an opportunity navigating the different payers that we work with, like Medicare and different insurance companies, navigating different contracts, and figuring out how we can best make healthcare in the ambulatory setting attainable and affordable for the patient.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity, transparency, and really directness.
