Ten minutes with Heather

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to resilience, adaptability, hard work, and my ability to build genuine relationships with the people I serve. Throughout my career, I have learned to embrace change, overcome challenges, and remain open to new opportunities, whether that meant working in different industries, adapting my business during COVID, or expanding my services through entrepreneurship and my notary license. I believe that talent is only the beginning; success requires initiative, flexibility, consistency, and a willingness to keep moving forward when circumstances change. Most importantly, I understand that people remember how you make them feel, so I strive to provide more than a service by creating an experience built on trust, care, and personal connection. Whether I am helping a client choose quality hair products, using technology to assist an older client, or simply taking the time to listen, those small acts of care have helped me build lasting relationships, earn referrals, and grow a career that is both meaningful and rewarding.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I ever received came from my father, who taught me at a young age to recognize the value of my talents and have the confidence to build something from them. When I was 14, he helped me understand that hairstyling was more than something I enjoyed; it was a skill that could become a business and create opportunities for me. That lesson has stayed with me throughout my career. I have also learned that success is built on relationships, not just technical ability. Trust, reliability, communication, and genuinely caring for people are essential to building a lasting business. Finally, I have learned to value every experience, even those that may not seem directly connected to my career. My work across different industries taught me organization, customer service, problem-solving, communication, and adaptability, all of which have helped me become a stronger entrepreneur.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the beauty industry is to make customer service a top priority because your talent and technical skills will only take you so far. Treat every client with respect, listen to their needs, be dependable, and create an experience that makes them want to return. Your work will speak for itself, but the way you treat people will determine the relationships and reputation you build. Stay professional, continue learning, believe in your abilities, and remember that consistency and genuine care can open doors that talent alone cannot.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest opportunities in my field right now is the ability to rebrand and expand beyond traditional hairstyling by positioning myself as a Platform Artist and pursuing opportunities to work with celebrities and larger beauty productions. This next chapter requires me to continually refine my skills, strengthen my professional brand, build industry relationships, and remain adaptable to new opportunities. I see rebranding as an opportunity to showcase my creativity and experience on a larger platform while continuing to provide the quality, professionalism, and personalized service that have defined my career.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me are family, integrity, compassion, service, authenticity, perseverance, and community. As a mother, I understand the importance of creating stability and building a life that provides both purpose and independence. I believe everyone deserves to be treated with respect, kindness, and genuine care, whether they are sitting in my chair, working with me through my notary services, or simply crossing my path. I also believe in giving back and contributing to my community through service and involvement. Ultimately, I measure success by the positive impact I can make one person at a time, whether I am helping someone feel beautiful and confident, supporting a bride on her wedding day, educating another beauty professional, or simply showing an older client patience and kindness. Every interaction is an opportunity to help someone feel valued and leave better than when they arrived.
