Her Story
About Heather
Since graduating from college in 2008, Heather Garner has built a career defined by strategic thinking, adaptability, and a deep commitment to helping organizations grow. She began her professional journey at a full‑service marketing agency in Atlanta, where she developed a comprehensive foundation in marketing and advertising at a pivotal moment for the industry. Immersed in everything from event marketing and full‑cycle account management to scriptwriting, voiceover production, and integrated campaign development, she gained hands‑on experience blending traditional marketing with emerging digital strategies as the digital landscape rapidly expanded.
After five years at the agency, Garner returned to Columbia, South Carolina—her alma mater, the University of South Carolina—ready to expand her expertise by pairing her marketing background with sales and digital strategy. She joined McClatchy, where she spent nearly seven years navigating one of the most competitive media environments in the country. She distinguished herself through exceptional performance and relationship‑driven success. Her work earned her a Presidential Award, a national recognition reserved for a small group of top performers, honoring her revenue growth, new customer acquisition, and ability to cultivate long‑term client partnerships.
During her tenure at McClatchy, Garner partnered with clients across a broad range of industries—including healthcare, automotive, local businesses, events, and farm credit institutions—strengthening her reputation as a versatile and trusted marketing advisor. At the core of her work has always been a passion for helping others succeed. She excels at developing marketing plans and strategic frameworks that align directly with each client’s unique goals, ensuring that growth is both intentional and measurable.
Following the COVID‑19 pandemic, Garner transitioned from sales into a more consultative role, bringing her expertise to AgFirst Farm Credit Bank. Today, she works closely with 17 Farm Credit associations providing strategic guidance and innovative ideas to strengthen and scale their marketing efforts. Her work supports not only institutional growth but also a broader mission: sustaining and revitalizing American agriculture.
Garner is deeply involved in advancing the Farm Credit mission, particularly its focus on educating and supporting young, beginning, and small farmers. She oversees AgBizInfo, a nationwide educational program with 39 partners dedicated to equipping the next generation of farmers with the knowledge and resources needed to start or expand farming operations. As the agricultural industry faces a generational shift—driven by the decline of multigenerational farming and increased migration into tech‑focused careers—Garner’s work plays a critical role in inspiring renewed interest in farming and strengthening the future domestic food supply.
In this role, she leads a team responsible for content creation, social media, and paid marketing campaigns, all designed to drive engagement, connect prospective farmers with valuable resources, and generate high‑quality loan leads for Farm Credit associations. Through strategic leadership and purpose‑driven marketing, Heather Garner continues to make a lasting impact—helping businesses grow, empowering communities, and shaping the future of agriculture nationwide.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Heather
01What do you attribute your success to?
I believe success comes from a commitment to lifelong learning and a willingness to continuously evolve—both professionally and personally. I’ve always held a strong work ethic, and that foundation has been key throughout my career. I push myself to embrace change, take on new challenges, and stay current with the latest trends, tools, and resources in marketing.
In an industry that never stands still, ongoing education is not only essential—it’s something I genuinely enjoy. Whether it’s exploring emerging strategies, new platforms, or advances in AI and data‑driven marketing, I’m motivated by the opportunity to keep learning and applying what’s next. I make a conscious effort not to become complacent; instead, I focus on growth, adaptability, and continuous improvement.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve received—particularly early in my sales career—was to form my own perspectives rather than relying on the opinions of others. I often heard warnings like, “Don’t go after that client—they’re difficult,” or “They’ll never work with us because of who we are.” Instead of discouraging me, those comments motivated me.
I learned quickly that secondhand perceptions don’t tell the full story. I made it a point to approach every opportunity with an open mind, confident that I could build trust, shift perceptions, and create meaningful relationships. More often than not, those efforts led to successful partnerships and long‑term collaboration.
That advice ultimately shaped how I approach both people and business: don’t allow someone else’s experience—especially a negative one—to determine your own path. Take the time to engage directly, gather your own insights, and make informed judgments. Growth often comes from challenging assumptions and being willing to prove that a different outcome is possible.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice is simple: keep pushing boundaries and don’t let obstacles deter you. Marketing and advertising can be a fast‑paced and demanding industry, but for those who are passionate about people, creativity, and strategic thinking, it offers an incredible range of opportunities. The field is broad and collaborative—spanning roles from graphic design and web development to account management and data‑driven market analysis—all working together to drive meaningful results.
Above all, perseverance is essential. Early in my career, the industry was largely male‑dominated, and it wasn’t uncommon to find myself as the only woman in the room. While that can be intimidating, it should never be a barrier to pursuing your goals. Although the landscape is evolving—I now work alongside more women than ever before—it’s important not to let those moments discourage you. Stay focused, remain confident in your expertise, and continue pursuing your passion. Progress comes from resilience, and meaningful change happens when you show up, speak up, and refuse to give up.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I’m genuinely excited about the role artificial intelligence is beginning to play in marketing and communications. The tools emerging from this space are transformative—enhancing speed, efficiency, and creativity in ways we haven’t seen before. In many ways, AI functions like an additional team member, supporting everything from ideation and copy development to proofreading and content refinement.
That said, I firmly believe there will always be a need for a human in the process. AI is not a replacement for strategic thinking, judgment, or creativity—it’s a powerful complement. Used thoughtfully, it presents both an opportunity and a challenge. Understanding when and how to apply AI effectively will be increasingly important as the technology continues to evolve and integrate into more aspects of our work.
In marketing, staying informed is critical. Even if you’re not fully immersed in every new tool or platform, maintaining a strong working knowledge of what’s emerging is essential to avoid falling behind. The industry is inherently cyclical and constantly evolving, which allows us to anticipate trends—but it also requires a commitment to continuous learning.
While keeping pace can be demanding, it’s also one of the most rewarding aspects of working in this field. There’s always something new to explore, test, and refine. That ongoing evolution is what keeps marketing dynamic—and it’s what continues to fuel my passion for the work.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity is fundamental to everything I do. I believe respect for others is essential, along with creating an environment where team members feel comfortable sharing ideas and collaborating openly. Strong collaboration, grounded in trust and mutual respect, is critical to working effectively with others and achieving meaningful results.
Equally important is having an open mind and a genuine willingness to listen. That means truly hearing what others are saying—rather than simply waiting for your turn to speak or focusing on the next step. Taking the time to listen thoughtfully helps strengthen projects, improve outcomes, and build stronger relationships. Being receptive to feedback and valuing diverse perspectives are key components of successful teamwork and long‑term professional growth.
