Heather Hafer is a passionate advocate for equity in education and a dedicated leader in competency-based learning, coaching, and experiential education. As Lead Academic Coach at Western Governors University, she empowers students and coaches to achieve their fullest potential through individualized support, reflective learning, and transformative leadership practices. With over a decade of experience in both secondary and higher education, Heather’s work is guided by her belief that authentic change begins within the individual and radiates outward—to families, communities, and society at large.

Heather’s career reflects her deep commitment to student-centered learning and educational innovation. Prior to her current role, she served in various instructional and leadership positions including Director of Project-Based Learning at SailFuture, where she helped design hands-on, competency-based curricula for at-risk youth. Her earlier experiences as a Teach For America and AmeriCorps member, high school teacher, and instructional coach shaped her expertise in project-based learning, design thinking, and communication-driven leadership. Throughout her career, Heather has remained devoted to fostering spaces of mutual regard, empathy, and collaboration that nurture growth for both educators and learners.

Heather earned her Master of Arts in Communication and Leadership Studies from Gonzaga University, where she also completed an international media program in Cagli, Italy. Her academic foundation and professional journey reflect her core values of integrity, creativity, consistency, and collective accomplishment. Whether guiding students, mentoring coaches, or advocating for equitable educational systems, Heather continues to inspire transformation through meaningful relationships, reflective practice, and the shared pursuit of lifelong learning.

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is to never be afraid to speak up and advocate for what you deserve. Stay true to what you love, and make sure to surround yourself with mentors who will guide, challenge, and support your growth.

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in my field right now is navigating the constraints of existing systems and the way funding is allocated for programs. However, these challenges also present opportunities to advocate for more equitable resource distribution and to innovate within those boundaries to create meaningful impact.
