Her Story

About Heather

When I was young, I became pregnant with my daughter and was in a very up-and-down relationship with someone who didn't want to provide. I decided to take the initiative and go find myself something. I originally went to what I thought was a dental school, but it turned out there was an ultrasound diagnostic program and a medical assistant program, so I decided to go the medical assistant route. That was my initial get my butt going and take care of my daughter kind of thing. I completed that two-year program in March 2000 while I was 8 months pregnant right before graduation, and I'd have to say that was my biggest achievement under the circumstances. My daughter was my initial kick in the butt, and we have a strong relationship because of that. From there, I went into pediatrics and actually worked for the doctor that my daughter went to from birth. I also did OBGYN for my externship. I love pediatrics, it's my main niche, and I did that for a couple years on and off. Then I went into podiatry, which in Florida is very interesting because we have a lot of elderly people who have diabetes and things like that, but I really don't care for feet - I love babies, not feet. Initially, I wanted to be a neonatal practitioner, but that just did not happen. After these years in the medical field, I decided I wanted to do something a little different. I did some work in between for warehouses and logistics, and then I opened my own business with my father in 2019-2020. We did a hotshot trucking company together, I did a dispatch company dispatching other truckers along with my father, and I did a travel business in the industry as well. During COVID, those things kind of went crazy, and my father passed away about 4 years ago, so I decided not to do this anymore. I am initially going back into the health field on June 2nd to take care of elderly senior citizens. A family member of mine opened a business in healthcare because she was taking care of senior citizens at an assisted living, so she's opened her own business and is hiring family. We're gonna go into business together and take shifts and take on clients. I am also graduating pretty soon from medical billing and coding.

Ten minutes with Heather

01What do you attribute your success to?

The key factor to my success has just been God. I lean on Him for everything, I pray to Him for everything, and my family. My kids, every day that I look at them and see them struggling or anything that they go through, that makes me want more, to provide more, and give them better. I've learned over the last couple of years that the key to success is not giving up. A lot of us go through many different things, and I've just realized, you know, just don't give up. It seems impossible at times, it seems hard, but it's so rewarding.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would have to say the most advice I could give to someone is to not give up. There's gonna be trials and tribulations. There's gonna be things that come about that you cannot control. Just don't give up. Keep going. Fight through it. Even if you have to take time off, go back to it. It's something I've learned over the last couple of years - the key to success is not giving up. A lot of us go through many different things, and I've just realized, you know, just don't give up. It seems impossible at times, it seems hard, but it's so rewarding.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I find most rewarding being able to be there, like I could be for my own kids and my own family when someone is sick, just getting that initial, you know, everything's gonna be alright, because a lot of times, people seem very sad when they are sick, or there's no hope, and I just want people to know that there is hope, and there is somebody that cares, and that there is somebody that is there. A lot of people don't have anybody, I've noticed in this field, that are actually there for them. So, you know, if I can be that daughter, that family member for them, to help them through this, that is the most rewarding for me. When I do have free time, I focus on my grandkids, who I take care of. I've raised their whole life. My daughter has type 1 diabetes, so she's very sick a lot, so I raised both of my granddaughters, and my son. Outside of work, it's always more work and focus and research at home.
