Her Story

About Heather

I've been working as a virtual assistant for about 8 years, with roughly 10 years of experience in my field overall. My career began in customer service working locally, and then I transitioned to working at an online university in enrollment advising. When I decided to become a mom, I wanted to continue working but needed flexibility, so I found the virtual assistant role and started off very small. It just kind of snowballed into taking on more clients at once, and I've truly enjoyed the flexibility it provides. My day typically starts mid-morning for a couple hours where I handle email management, scheduling, travel planning, rescheduling on calendars, and making sure everything's in order. Then I usually hop on another one or two times throughout the day and evening. What I love most is helping executives on the back end with the little mundane things that I actually enjoy but they just don't have time to do. My proudest moments come when I get positive feedback not only from the clients I work with, but from individuals who work with my clients and notice how streamlined everything is and that nothing really falls through the cracks.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Even if it's something that's completely out of the realm of what you're doing, definitely give it a try, because you never know what might come of it.

02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I think it's the element of AI coming in. Just knowing that AI can only do so much as an assistant, sometimes it's things that we do that some people don't really understand, so just be confident in your work.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Communication, consistency, following through, and accountability are the values most important to me in both my work and personal life.
