After spending 17 years as a stay-at-home mother raising her six children, she made the bold decision to enter the workforce in an entirely new field. By mastering key systems such as SAP and gaining hands-on operational experience, she built a strong foundation that opened the door to leadership opportunities within the industry.

Today, Heather serves as a Warehouse Lead at Sandvik in Nevada, where she oversees inventory management, order fulfillment, materials coordination, and daily warehouse operations. In her role, she leads a team responsible for receiving and distributing parts, processing customer orders, coordinating truck activity, and ensuring efficient workflow throughout the warehouse. Working a rotating schedule of 12-hour shifts, she helps maintain the operational excellence that supports mining customers and business partners. Her leadership style is rooted in dependability, professionalism, and clear communication, ensuring both her team and customers receive the support they need to succeed.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Heather

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to hard work, persistence, and a strong willingness to learn on the job, including developing new technical skills such as SAP. Entering the mining and warehouse industry with no prior experience required me to stay committed and adaptable. I also credit the encouragement and support I received from my first boss, who believed in my potential and helped me grow in a challenging new environment.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

I credit the leaders, coworkers, and team members who guided and supported me as I learned the industry. Their encouragement played a key role in helping me successfully navigate a completely new career path and build confidence in my abilities. Over time, their advice and mentorship helped me grow into a stronger and more capable leader.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would advise young women entering this industry to expect a male-dominated environment and to be prepared to set clear boundaries while maintaining professionalism at all times. It is important not to feel pressured to adopt masculine behavior in order to succeed. Instead, I encourage women to remain confident in who they are, demand respect, and understand their own value and capabilities.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in my field is navigating cultural and behavioral barriers that exist for women in a male-dominated industry, including occasional condescension and inappropriate behavior from some colleagues. At the same time, there are significant opportunities for growth, including company-supported advancement, travel, and the chance to build strong professional networks across the mining community and with international colleagues.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me are family, professionalism, dignity, perseverance, and respect for others. I also place great importance on maintaining composure, especially in challenging situations, as it allows me to lead and respond effectively while staying true to my principles.
