About Heather
Heather Zike is a higher education leader and student success advocate with more than 17 years of experience in academic advising, undergraduate program administration, and student development. She serves as Assistant Director of Undergraduate Programs for the Siebel School of Computing and Data Science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where she provides strategic leadership for undergraduate advising, recruitment, student engagement, and academic support initiatives. Throughout her career, Heather has become known for helping students navigate the challenges of one of the nation's most competitive computer science programs while fostering an inclusive, supportive environment that promotes both academic achievement and personal well-being.
Heather's professional journey began with a passion for counseling and advocacy. After earning her bachelor's degree in Health Education and a master's degree in College Student Affairs from Eastern Illinois University, she became a certified domestic violence advocate and worked with individuals and families in crisis. Those experiences inspired her transition into higher education, where she discovered her calling to help students pursue educational opportunities and overcome barriers to success. Since joining the University of Illinois in 2008, she has led numerous recruitment and outreach initiatives, championed programs supporting women in STEM, coordinated large-scale student events, and played a key role in developing advising strategies, study abroad experiences, and campus partnerships that enhance the undergraduate experience.
Beyond her administrative responsibilities, Heather is deeply committed to student wellness, leadership development, and community service. She teaches Mental Health First Aid, advocates for increased mental health awareness on campus, and works to reduce stigma by connecting students with critical resources and support. She also dedicates her time to service initiatives, including leading the long-running Appalachia service project and participating in mission trips focused on home repair and assisting vulnerable communities. Guided by integrity, compassion, and a genuine desire to help others succeed, Heather believes that education has the power to transform lives and that every student deserves the opportunity to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.
