Heena Maithania, Ph.D., is a Senior Scientist II at Frontage Laboratories, Inc., based in Exton, Pennsylvania, United States. She is a highly experienced pharmaceutical scientist with approximately 15 years of expertise in drug formulation and development, specializing in translational research that bridges laboratory discoveries with clinical applications. In her current role, she leads product development projects from early-stage design through Phase 1 and Phase 2 clinical trials, focusing on dosage forms such as tablets, capsules, and injectable formulations. Her work is conducted under strict Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and regulatory standards, with a strong emphasis on developing safe and effective therapies for life-threatening diseases, particularly cancer.

Heena earned her Ph.D. in Pharmaceutics from the Institute of Chemical Technology in Mumbai, India, where her research focused on nanoparticulate drug delivery systems for targeted therapy of infectious diseases. During her doctoral work, she developed and patented a nanotechnology-based formulation designed to treat zoonotic infections, demonstrating a strong translational impact by advancing research from the laboratory to industrial application. She also completed her master’s degree in Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry, where she studied medicinal plants for potential cytotoxic activity. Following her Ph.D., she pursued postdoctoral research at the University of Iowa, further strengthening her expertise in advanced pharmaceutical sciences before transitioning into the pharmaceutical industry in the United States.

Throughout her career, Heena has contributed to multiple peer-reviewed publications, patents, and scientific presentations in areas such as nanomedicine, lipid-based drug delivery systems, and pharmaceutical manufacturing technologies. Her work has been recognized through national awards and research grants, including recognition for innovative solutions during the COVID-19 pandemic. She is an active member of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) and continues to contribute to scientific advancement through research, collaboration, and knowledge sharing. Her professional journey reflects a commitment to innovation, regulatory excellence, and improving global health through advanced pharmaceutical development.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my sincerity and the focus that I constantly put forward in my research. The determination that I have to focus on minor details of each and everything is crucial. The rigorous training that I have gone through over the past years has shaped my approach. Mainly, research is all about integrity. In pharmaceutical sciences, you directly deal with healthcare and human health, so you can't be sloppy. You need to be focused enough in your task because we are healthcare scientists who directly deal with human health. It's very important to be determined and focused on your task, especially when your work can directly impact patient lives.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

One of the strongest lessons throughout Heena’s journey has been to remain patient, consistent, and committed to the process, even when results take time. In pharmaceutical research, breakthroughs require persistence, attention to detail, and trust in the scientific process.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice for young women would be to identify the area of interest, what they are passionate about, because it's very important in research. You need to be passionate about what you're doing, and only then you can give your 100% in research, because it's a very challenging field. At the same time, it's very rewarding. The more you invest, the better you get - that's how it is. Research requires passion and dedication, and when you find what truly interests you, you can fully commit to the work and see the rewards that come from that investment.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The challenging part of my field is that all the molecules we research do not necessarily reach the market. It involves a lot of funding and a lot of resources. We have to bring everything together in one place in order to make a formulation or a molecule reach the market, or to reach the population who actually needs them. Having proper resources and the right technique or talent at the right time is very important to develop a product. On the opportunities side, there is no doubt that pharmaceutical is a very booming field, and health is wealth. It has a number of opportunities, especially in terms of research. As per WHO, cancer is one of the leading causes of death, so the more we invest in new molecules, the more we will be able to provide better life for the patients who are suffering from cancer. I would say there is ample opportunity in the field of formulation development to make a real difference in patients' lives.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

According to me, it is very important to be focused. If I speak about my professional life, one thing that I believe is discipline is the most important virtue, especially as a pharmaceutical scientist. One needs to be very disciplined and meticulous in whatever task they are trying to perform or achieve. Because pharmaceuticals is a field where you can't be sloppy - you need to be focused enough in your task, because you directly deal with healthcare. We are healthcare scientists, so you directly deal with human health. It's very important to be determined and focused on your task because the work we do has direct implications for patients and their wellbeing.
