Her Story

About Heidi

I started my nonprofit career 13 years ago as a volunteer who was recruited and kept working until I found myself hired. After six years with my first organization, they suddenly changed direction in 2020 and let many of us go. During COVID, when hiring was scarce, a local lady who ran a small private grant writing firm took a chance on me after I was one of only 10 people out of hundreds who followed her instructions correctly. That launched me into nonprofit development, and I spent years grant writing and bringing in millions of dollars for over 15 organizations, most local to Florida and some international. I then did a stint with the Atlantic Classical Orchestra for a season doing their marketing and development, which was probably the most fun time of my life. Through connections from that role, I met my current supervisor at Treasure Coast Homeless Services Council, where I now handle development work including grant writing, fundraising, and managing our major HUD NOFO process each year. I wear many hats at this organization, and my days involve a lot of research, writing, and compiling grants while keeping all the moving parts on track. I work remotely most of the time, always at my desk typing away to bring the money in.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Be creative. Be willing to look at the stuff that you may not assume would guide you where you need to be, because you never know what's going to be useful. A lot of people think that there's a specific path, but when it comes to working in nonprofits, after 13 years, I can say that there's not always one specific path. Each nonprofit has its own needs, and its own things that work well for it, and I've never grant-writed in the same way for two organizations. You always have to be creative and figure out what works best in each specific field.
