Her Story

About Helena

I am an event host, public speaker, and motivational speaker with a professional background in finance and accounting. I have been event hosting for about 5 years while working in finance for 12 years across various industries including medical, government (City of Houston), consulting, manufacturing, and currently chemical corrosion. I hold a Bachelor's in Accounting and an MBA, which provided a strong foundation for my entrepreneurship. My side business involves managing books, taxes, payroll, and bookkeeping for small companies. I am proud of finding my voice and overcoming shyness to pursue hosting in a male-dominated field, recently receiving a humanitarian award from Afrocentric for my work with the Legree E project supporting homelessness and orphanages.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Helena

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to God, the grace of God and guidance, my hard work, consistency, not being scared to push through, and the support of my family and friends who show up for me.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I received is to love myself, believe and trust in myself, and be consistent, as consistency removes distractions.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

You have to push, believe in yourself, trust yourself, be consistent, and don't listen to the naysayers. Every person started somewhere and it took multiple tries. Tell yourself every day 'I can do it.'

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Visibility is a big challenge - people don't know what I do. Balancing multiple careers without breaking down is another. In event hosting, people need to understand it's more than just the microphone; it requires engagement and energy.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Being adaptable, always loving to learn and grow, providing service even when not paid, and prioritizing family and community.
