Her Story
About Honora
I'm currently a senior at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut, where I'm earning my bachelor's in health science with a concentration in nutrition and dietetics, and minoring in psychology. I've been accepted into my master's graduate program at University of St. Joseph's to become a registered dietitian. It's a year and five months hands-on internship where I'll get to work with the football team at University of New Haven, creating nutrition programs and working directly with athletes. I've been in the health sciences field for 4 years and in the fitness realm for over 6 years. I started as a waitress from age 15 for about 4 years, then began working at Edge Fitness Clubs at the front desk, motivating people to come into the gym and helping them start their fitness journeys. I got promoted from front desk into sales and moved locations. I never thought sales would be for me because salespeople get a bad rep, but I saw a new representation of sales where I'm able to help people start their fitness journey and guide them through what our club can offer. For example, there was a guy who came in who had a stroke and had poor connectivity from his occipital lobe to his frontal lobe, so he couldn't see based on coordination. I gave him a tour and had him meet one of our coaches, and now they've been working together for a couple months and his connectivity has improved substantially, which has been really cool to see. I've lost 30 pounds throughout my years in college, so I help a lot of my friends do the same, but I'm very careful when giving nutrition advice because I don't have the credentials yet to give out nutrition plans. I'm the student liaison on the board of Connecticut Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, where I represent students and help bridge the gap between students getting into the profession, helping them with internship opportunities, new research, and scholarships. One of my biggest goals is to create an ambassador program at colleges and universities for Connecticut Nutrition and Dietetics so students can go to their campuses and spread the word about becoming student members.

Ten minutes with Honora
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my personal growth and the confidence I've built in myself. I've lost 30 pounds throughout college and have become the person I am now, which has been one of my biggest achievements. I believe that confidence is the roadblock to achieving any of your goals, and if you have the confidence to do it, you can do it, because no one who keeps trying will fail. I've delved so much into my college experience and have been gifted so many opportunities, from making Dean's List twice to being chosen for leadership positions like the exec board as a Team Impact Fellow and becoming president of Her Campus. I think all of my biggest achievements have been my personal growth, and that transformation has allowed me to help others start their own journeys. I'm never not working and I love setting new goals for myself, whether that's in the gym, through reading growth mindset books, or journaling. My whole mission is spreading confidence to people and getting them in tune with themselves, because I believe every single person on this earth has the opportunity to make a difference.
02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field is that students don't know about the requirements for becoming a registered dietitian. You have to go to an accredited program and be a student member of organizations like Connecticut Nutrition and Dietetics, but that's not really talked about in the colleges. There are a lot of scholarships and opportunities that come with being a student member, but students aren't aware of them. That's why one of my biggest goals as student liaison is to create an ambassador program at colleges and universities so students can go to their campuses and spread the word, helping more people become student members and access these resources. I want to help bridge the gap between students getting into the profession by providing information about internship opportunities, new research, and scholarships.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The most important value to me is making a difference and helping others feel empowered. I believe that everyone wants to live their life feeling like they made a difference, and I want to show people that they have the opportunity to make a difference too. I think every single person on this earth has that opportunity, but sometimes people get lost in themselves and think they're not capable of making a difference because they don't love themselves. That's why my mission with Crowns and Confidence is to create a space where people can work on themselves while also making a difference in the community. I want people to feel empowered because they're not only choosing themselves and bettering their health, but they're also making a bigger impact to the community around them and being a part of something bigger than themselves. Confidence is everything to me because I believe it's the roadblock to achieving any goals, and spreading that confidence to others through my work, my friendships, and the impacts I make is what drives me.
