About Ida
My legal career has been a journey of growth, adaptation, and ultimately finding the right environment where I can thrive both professionally and personally. After graduating from Vermont Law School in 2013, I started in motor vehicle accident defense for an insurance company, then moved into medical malpractice defense at some of the bigger firms in New York City, defending top doctors and hospitals in the country and the world. That experience was incredibly meaningful and expanded my career in significant ways - I learned so much about medicine. But I discovered that the incredible pressure and stress of the schedules required in NYC firm practice were affecting my health. I have a borderline autoimmune condition where when I reach a certain level of stress, I experience chronic pain and crippling fatigue. I moved to Albany to stay with family and figure out my next steps, determining that traditional firm practice wasn't the best for me because I needed more flexibility around my health concerns. I hung out my own shingle and was handed a book of business in landlord-tenant law, which I learned. Shortly after going out on my own, I was offered a position as a partner in a virtual law firm, which felt right because I retained my independence and flexibility while having the benefit of partners to collaborate with and the camaraderie of shared practice. In July 2023, seven partners from that firm and I, along with another individual, started Holon Law Partners. We began with 8 attorneys and have grown to 13 attorneys across about 9 states and even Paris. Our firm has 5 main practice areas: regulated industries, emerging tech, intellectual property, litigation, and employment. I've expanded my practice into general litigation and personal injury, doing mostly plaintiff's work now - the opposite of what I was doing in New York City. One of our most important priorities as we've developed this firm is fostering collaboration and community amongst our attorneys. It's important to us that we're not fostering or requiring the kind of intensive, competitive, often toxic work environment that exists in most law firms today. Even though we're fully virtual with no physical offices, we work really hard to maintain connection. Empathy, diversity, and empowerment are some of our most important values at the firm, in complement to excellent legal services. The name Holon comes from a systems theory which basically postulates that every entity, whether it's an atom, a human, or a corporation, is sufficient unto itself but also relies on other entities to be the best iteration of itself. That philosophy guides everything we do.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
The most important thing is, don't go to law school unless you're sure that you have a passion for law and for what you can do with law. Law school is no joke, and it's so, so expensive. There's a lot of ways that you can serve your community, and I just saw a lot of colleagues who were really miserable in law school, whereas I loved it. I don't think it's worth putting yourself through that unless you really want it. The other thing is, as we transition from a really entrenched generational trend of work until you drop and all of that, be confident in your goals and know what you're willing to sacrifice and what is not sacrificeable - what you can't compromise. Because no one else can do that. You're the only person who can make those value assessments. And actually, you're not going to be the only one who suffers from that - your job will suffer, your clients will suffer. So holding yourself out and taking care of yourself is critical.
02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Definitely, empathy is one of the most important things that I struggle to live into in everything I do. I've had experience with narcissists close to me in my life, and I've seen the kind of destructive things that can happen when you're not seeing and feeling and hearing what's going on around you and the people around you. So that's something I'm very passionate about, is empathy.
