Her Story
About Ilana
I began my professional journey in 2000 in Brazil, driven by a strong sense of justice that led me to law school. While studying, I fell in love with capital markets as a subject and decided to pursue a career in that field. I worked as legal counsel for major banks in Brazil, including Banco Santander and Itaubank, for nearly 10 years. When I moved to the U.S. in 2010, I faced a choice between returning to school for a JD or transitioning into a different role within the financial industry. I chose the natural path and started in Swiss private banking just four months after arriving. After having my first child, I moved to a family office for more flexibility, then returned to my previous team to maintain my licenses. I worked with that same team when we moved to XP Securities, and since 2018, I've been at Merrill Lynch with a different team. I've been there almost eight years now. Three years ago, I earned the CPWA designation, and I continue to study and grow constantly. I currently serve as business manager for my financial advisor team, where I function as the COO. My days are varied - I help clients with transfers, investments, trades, and succession planning, working closely with our wealth planning team to understand each client's situation and determine the best setup for them. I also manage all the client associates, oversee our metrics and numbers, and ensure we're delivering on expectations. I really like what I do and don't see myself doing anything else.

Ten minutes with Ilana
01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Never stop learning. Learning is key. Take the licenses, all the licenses, designations, and learn, because this is a very dynamic field. There are many new products every day, new regulations, so never stop learning, and always improve and do your best.
02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The most challenging thing for everybody here are the regulations and the limitations that we have. I want to help my clients in everything that I can, and sometimes we have limitations, or we cannot do certain things because it's considered over-servicing. My biggest challenge is to be able to help my client as much as I can within the limitations that I have.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I'm really focused on spirituality and self-knowledge. I've been doing so many courses to develop that and to learn more about it. I really fell in love with horses in this search and the way that they contribute to our development as human beings. I'm always doing something - always doing a course, or a retreat, or something that helps me bring my contribution to this planet, not only in my professional field but personally as well. I feel that I have that need. Everybody that approaches me, I always try to bring my contribution to their personal lives. That's something that I have - it's my call. My sense of justice has been with me since I was born. I like things right, and I had that really strong feeling, which is why I decided to go to law school in Brazil.
