Her Story
About Imelda
Imelda R serves as a human resources analyst intermediate at the Arizona Department of Correction and Rehabilitation Reentry, where she has worked for three years after spending one and a half years in a similar role at U-Haul. Her responsibilities include filling vacancies across nine prison complexes throughout the state. She earned her international business degree in 2010 from Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, and participated in a three-month exchange program in Vancouver, Canada, to practice her English. Prior to entering HR, Imelda worked for eight years as a marketing consultant for a family-owned company after immigrating to the United States in 2013. She credits her mother and family for inspiring her path into human resources and values respect and fairness for employees above all. Imelda volunteers occasionally at Andre House and draws motivation from her belief that every job serves as a platform for the next level, a lesson from her uncle, while always approaching life with an empty glass ready to learn.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Imelda
01What do you attribute your success to?
I love to learn from everything and every person. We never should be with the glass full. We need to be with the glass empty to keep learning during our life.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
My uncle told me that every job should be a platform for the next level. Every position should be a platform to get to the next level.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Work on emotional intelligence. As a woman, that can be a weakness for us, so reverse it because men are very practical in everything.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
There's so much competence with smarter people than me with better experience. The best challenge is that you're not the most smart person; there's always someone else better than you.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Respect. I have always been looking for respect and fair things for people and for employees everywhere.
