What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to following my genuine passion and staying true to my evolving interests. While I initially set out to pursue television, I discovered during my studies that my heart belonged to radio. There’s something truly powerful about using my voice to create connection and conversation, and that realization solidified my path. Today, I host and produce a radio show on college radio, where I program music, edit PSAs, and manage content. I also run my own podcast, which gives me the creative freedom to explore topics I’m deeply passionate about and shape my own narrative. Both platforms have been incredibly rewarding and have strengthened my skills as a communicator and storyteller. I recently earned my associate’s degree in Mass Communications from Kennedy-King College and am now pursuing my bachelor’s degree in radio at Chicago State University. Returning to school at 32 was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, and I’m proud of the journey I’m on. My goal is to complete my master’s degree by the time I turn 38. Education has truly been the foundation of my growth—it’s given me the knowledge, discipline, and confidence to pursue my dreams with purpose.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve ever received is to stand firm in who I am and let my work speak for itself. As a Black woman in a male-dominated field, I’ve faced my share of stereotypes and assumptions about my abilities and place in the conversation. I’ve had to prove my credibility time and again, but through it all, I’ve learned the importance of authenticity and self-assurance. Staying true to my voice and trusting in my expertise has been key to my growth. I’m also deeply grateful for mentors like Marcella Jones and Troi Tyler at Chicago State University, who believed in me, challenged me to grow, and helped me refine my skills and confidence in this field. I am also grateful for my mother who has always taught me resilience and to have confidence in everything that I do.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering this industry is simple: don’t be afraid to make mistakes—they’re an essential part of your growth. Be persistent, stay adaptable, and always remain true to yourself. Your authenticity is your greatest strength and what will set you apart in any room. This industry evolves quickly, so never stop learning. Stay curious, embrace new technologies and trends, and continue refining your craft. Every challenge is an opportunity to grow, and every experience adds value to your journey.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field is overcoming stereotypes and biases—particularly as a Black woman in a male-dominated industry. There’s often an unspoken doubt about our credibility, technical skills, and ability to lead. I’ve had to prove myself repeatedly, not just once, but throughout my journey. Yet, within that challenge lies an incredible opportunity—to redefine perceptions, break barriers, and pave the way for more women of color to thrive in media. Every time I show up confidently and deliver excellent work, I help create space for the next generation to be seen, heard, and respected for their talents and expertise.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that guide me—both in my work and in my personal life—are authenticity, perseverance, and purpose. Authenticity is everything to me. In media, it’s easy to get caught up in trends or try to become what others expect, but I’ve learned that true connection happens when you’re real. Whether I’m on air, in the studio, or mentoring someone, I always strive to show up as my genuine self. Perseverance has also been essential. My journey hasn’t been easy—returning to school at 32, balancing work, and breaking into the industry have all come with challenges. There were moments of self-doubt, but quitting was never an option. I’m in this for the long game, and every step has strengthened my determination. Finally, purpose drives everything I do. I’m not just building a career—I’m building a platform to amplify stories that matter and create opportunities for others, especially young Black women finding their voices in media. Financial literacy is also deeply important to me. I believe young women, particularly those from marginalized communities, deserve access to knowledge that empowers them financially—how to budget, invest, and build generational wealth. I used to mentor girls through a youth program, and even though that initiative ended, my passion for uplifting others has never faded. I want my work to inspire freedom, confidence, and lasting impact.
