Her Story

About Irene

I've been involved in sports my entire life, starting track and field when I was very young in Europe. I ran Division I track at Eastern Kentucky University for four years on a full scholarship, which was essentially my job as I stepped out of my house in Spain and was able to live from that opportunity. It wasn't easy - I saw so many teammates from other countries leave because it requires so much passion, compromise, and resilience to get your master's or degree while doing all the recovery and putting in the extra hard work. I started my university education at the University of Barcelona studying communications in the cultural industry, but I transferred to America because it was the only way to be able to play sports and study at the same time. In Europe, unless you're top 3 in the nation, you can't do both. I wanted to take that risk and move to another country to learn - I love to face adversities and learn from them. I'm dyslexic, and I had professors back home tell me I shouldn't even go to college because I wouldn't get a degree, but I proved them wrong by earning both my MBA and my degree in public relations from Eastern Kentucky University. Now I'm in a beautiful moment of transition, figuring out my next steps - whether that's getting my real estate license in Florida, running professionally, or finding work in sports or public relations where I can connect with people and be useful to my community.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say that adversity is an opportunity. Whatever you have an adversity and you have an issue, that's an opportunity right there. Sometimes things happen because it's almost like just keep going, no matter what's happening, because eventually life is gonna get better. And I think through sports, you learn to think sick time - you have to keep swimming no matter what it takes. I also think it's so important to understand how important who you're surrounded with is. You have to have women with you that are gonna encourage you, love you, and believe in you. Sometimes whenever we feel weak, it's because we are surrounded by the wrong people. The Lord will always provide the right ones, but it's a matter of finding them, and sometimes you have to go through it to get there.
