Ten minutes with Irma

01What do you attribute your success to?

The support I get from my family is key to my success. My customers and carriers also play a big role, as my carriers teach me something every day. Without my family, I don't think I'd be where I am today.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Stay humble, always be empathetic to a person's situation, and always see the good in people. Remaining humble is key.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

It's not a man's world. Women have the ability to be successful in this industry just as much as a man. The woman's touch is always more significant because we carry maternal instinct. Treat this business like your baby. You have to take care of it and the people helping you grow. You can be successful in anything you do.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Rates are terrible right now, especially when fuel goes up, which affects carriers and brokers. Recalls in produce from Mexico and border issues cause delays and cancellations. Everyone has to adjust, and it hurts when rates drop significantly like from $2,500 to $1,600 per load.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Work ethic, honesty, trust, and honesty are key. If you drop the ball, be honest because customers and carriers will appreciate the honesty and maintain trust. Lying would mean losing them forever.
