About Isabel
Isabel Arbeláez is an accomplished geologist and commercial leader in the oil and gas industry with 20 years of progressive international experience. She currently serves as Sales and Marketing Manager – North America at Stratum Reservoir, where she leads strategic sales initiatives, marketing efforts, and client engagement across the region.
She earned her bachelor’s degree in Geology from Universidad de Caldas and began her career in Colombia, building a strong technical foundation in geoscience, formation evaluation, and subsurface analysis. Her early career focused on technical expertise, serving as a subject matter expert in geological interpretation and reservoir characterization.
After relocating to Houston 14 years ago through Weatherford, Isabel continued in technical roles before advancing to Supervisor of the U.S. Geology Group, marking her transition into leadership while maintaining deep technical involvement. She later expanded into business development management, where she strengthened her commercial acumen and developed a strong ability to bridge technical solutions with client and operational needs.
Following a brief career interruption during the pandemic, Isabel joined Stratum Reservoir— formerly part of Weatherford prior to its private equity acquisition — returning to a familiar technical environment in a more commercially focused capacity. She progressed from Senior Account Manager to Sales and Marketing Manager for North America, where she now combines her expertise in formation evaluation, geoscience, and reservoir characterization with strategic business leadership.
In her current role, Isabel leads client engagement initiatives, supports tendering and contract negotiations, conducts market intelligence and competitive analysis, and develops growth strategies aimed at identifying service gaps, strengthening customer relationships, and driving innovation aligned with evolving industry demands.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Isabel
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to passion, commitment, and adaptability. I give my full effort to everything I do, and I truly enjoy my work. When I commit to something, I give it my all, and I think that level of dedication has played a big role in my growth both personally and professionally.
One of my proudest achievements has been building and continuing to grow my career in this country while coming from a different culture and background. Becoming a manager in this industry required resilience, continuous learning, and the ability to adapt to new environments and challenges.
I’ve learned that success is not about following a perfectly rigid plan. Things rarely happen exactly as expected, so being flexible, open to change, and willing to evolve has been essential. I believe adaptability is one of the most valuable qualities anyone can have, both in leadership and in life.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
One of the best pieces of career advice I’ve ever received was: “Don’t be afraid to take a seat at the table, even if you feel you still have more to learn.”
Early in my career, I sometimes felt I needed to prove myself completely before speaking up or pursuing bigger opportunities. Over time, I realized that growth comes from stepping outside your comfort zone, being willing to learn, and trusting your abilities.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would encourage young women entering this industry to believe in their abilities and not be intimidated by challenges or by being in environments where women are still underrepresented. Be curious, keep learning, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone, because that’s where growth happens.
I would also say: stay authentic to who you are. Success comes from passion, resilience, adaptability, and consistency, and confidence grows with experience.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in the energy industry right now is its constant volatility. The industry is heavily influenced by geopolitical events, market fluctuations, and changes in global energy demand, which can create uncertainty for companies and professionals alike. In addition, exploration activity has slowed in some areas, while the industry is also navigating the transition toward new and alternative energy sources.
At the same time, I see this as a major opportunity. The energy sector is evolving, and companies are having to become more innovative, adaptable, and integrated in the way they approach subsurface evaluation and energy solutions. New energies are still a developing area, which creates space for learning, growth, and new career opportunities. I think professionals who are flexible, open to change, and willing to continuously learn will be the ones who thrive in this evolving industry.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that are most important to me, both professionally and personally, are integrity, resilience, empathy, and continuous growth. I believe in working hard, being accountable, and treating people with respect, regardless of their position or background.
Resilience has also been very important in my life. Challenges and unexpected changes can either stop you or help you grow, and I’ve learned the importance of adapting, staying positive, and continuing to move forward.
I also value authenticity and meaningful relationships. I believe success is not only about professional achievements, but also about the impact you have on others, the connections you build, and staying true to who you are throughout the journey.
