Her Story
About Isabel
I'm currently a full-time student at the University of Texas at San Antonio, studying Human Resource Management at the business school, and I'm set to graduate in May 2028. At my internship with Spa Glass, a commercial construction company, I'm learning how to scan resumes accurately, finding the proper information, and I've helped at campus recruiting events where I promote the company to students. I'm learning what makes someone a fit based on their experience, and I'm developing best practices for interviewing, learning how to make applicants feel heard and comfortable in what can be a very nerve-wracking process. My background is actually in creative writing. In high school, I attended the Northeast School of the Arts in their creative writing magnet program, and I was published many times in small literary magazines and in museums when they had exhibits surrounding poetry. I initially switched to accounting but realized I'm not a numbers-oriented person, so human resources suits my talents better. As vice president of Poetry with Purpose, a nonprofit organization, I manage outside communication with participating poets, coordinating their arrival, directions, biographies, and headshots for our events. We collaborate with other nonprofits to raise funds for them while providing poetry nights and spoken word events. This past Friday, we worked with the Southern Texas Alliance for Orphans, which mentors foster children and gives them families to guide them through their youth. It brought me to tears at the event, and I was honored to be part of that cause. I also serve as lead poetry editor for The Sagebrush Review, a UTSA-ran literary magazine, where I manage my editing team and provide the final say when there are disagreements about pieces. We receive about 150 poetry submissions, and I work with my team to bring our top selections together and decide what we want to publish.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I received was from my manager, Jeffrey, who is a team experience manager at Spa Glass. He told me that it's very important to be a personable and welcoming person in HR, so people feel comfortable enough to open up to you and vent. That's always important in a work environment, especially in a place like Human Resources, where people may be initially intimidated by you. It's important to just allow people to let that guard down with you.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Don't be shy. I think a lot of women are taught that it's best to lay low, and sometimes it's intimidating if there are stronger, more intimidating people in the workforce, men or women, but mainly men, to have that authority and not know if you have the right to speak up. But I think don't be shy. Don't be afraid of speaking your mind, your opinion, and putting yourself out there, because what you say might change a lot. So just do what you think is right.
