Her Story

About Isabella

I just graduated from law school on May 9th with my doctorate in law, and I'm currently preparing for the July 2026 Texas bar exam. Over the last 3 years, I've been doing legal work in various capacities. Most recently, I worked as a student attorney for the last year until I graduated. Before that, I was a summer law clerk for 3 years, and I also served as a judicial intern for a judge right before starting law school. Between college and law school, I worked as a waitress at a restaurant for about 2 years. My main area of expertise within law is criminal law, though I also focus on family law because I love getting that one-on-one interaction with clients and people going through difficult times in their life. During law school, I was president of the Women in Law student organization and served on the Executive Board of the Student Bar Association. What inspired me to get into law is that I've always wanted to help people - I'm very much a personable person and a people person, and I knew I wanted to go into a field that helped other people. I love that I can help clients get through difficult times and use my career and knowledge to impact people's lives. Right now, a typical day for me involves waking up at 8 in the morning and studying for my bar exams until about 6 or 7 pm, which consists of reading lectures, watching videos, doing practice problems, and writing essays.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would definitely say my parents - I would give it all to them. They're the ones who caught me through law school, who pushed me to succeed, and anytime I doubted myself or thought I couldn't do anything, they always had just the utmost faith in me and always knew that I could do anything that I set my mind to, even though I felt like I couldn't most of the time. They really pushed me and supported me throughout everything.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I ever received was when someone told me going into law school to make sure you are doing something you love, but if you're gonna do something you love, try to be the best at it. That's something I always live by - do something you love and be passionate about it, and strive to be the best at it.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would tell them to not be afraid, to not be scared that they can do anything that they set their mind to. Even if things seem difficult or impossible, just give it your all and try, because you never know how far you'll go and how much you'll succeed. I've seen so many people come into this industry not thinking that they were good enough to get into law school, or good enough to get the position, or didn't have the best grades or background, and inevitably they became the best at it compared to people who maybe had more experience, or higher grades, or more work experience and background. So I would just say, if you believe you can do it, you definitely can, as long as you just give it your all.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Some of the biggest challenges would be getting the job in the first place. Not so much that you couldn't do it, but it's so competitive right now - there's a lot of people coming out of law school and a lot of people looking for jobs in the legal industry, so it's more competitive in that way. It's kind of an oversaturated field at the moment in specific areas. But there are still tons and tons of opportunities - everybody's looking for attorneys. It may not be exactly what you want in the moment, but you can always get there.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

My most important values are surrounding myself in work and outside of work with people who are all around just a good person - people who are ethical, good to you, and nice to other people. Honesty is a really huge value for me when it comes to work and my personal life. I also value people who aren't afraid to do the work but ask questions if they don't know what they're doing. I like surrounding myself with people who are happy, nice people who want to interact with other people, who are good to strangers, good to their friends, and just honest.
