Her Story

About Ivannah

My career path has been quite unique and honestly felt like destiny. I started in business strategy consulting and grants after being let go from my full-time corporate job at GEICO. That job loss activated the entrepreneur in me, and I began branding myself as a personal assistant, going from business to business connecting with owners and pitching my services. Through that networking, I came in contact with a business owner who didn't need personal assistance but had a grant opportunity she wanted to pursue as a 20-plus year store owner. She asked if I could do it, and honestly, I didn't know whether I could or not, but I applied for that $10,000 grant and have literally been riding ever since. That was six years ago. My most notable achievement to date is securing a $300,000 capital funding grant for a nonprofit that extends supportive housing services. They needed a generator to ensure that wheelchair-bound residents would have access to elevators in the event of an energy surge or power outage, and writing and securing that grant is my highest achievement and the largest one-time gift I've received. Today, my work is a myriad transitioning between business strategy, extending systemic solutions, and fundraising. A typical day looks like reaching out to leads, doing research to stay up to the market and trends, checking in with clients to ensure deadlines are met and reporting is completed, and refining my systems to make the consumer process as seamless as possible. Every day looks very different depending on what my clients need.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

I would say there are two pieces of advice that have shaped me. One is 'you belong here.' As a kid who went through the foster care system and adoption, I dealt with rejection and abandonment. I always had to combat that inner voice that I wasn't wanted, that I couldn't take up space because no one wanted to hear what I had to say, and that I didn't add value. But of course, that was a lie that I conquered. Understanding that you belong here applies to every space, including your career. The second piece is 'there's room for you.' A lot of times we think there are so many other individuals doing the exact same thing that we want to do or feel called to do, and we wonder what makes us unique. Your competitive edge is that you are you. There is space for you, so stand in that confidence, own that authenticity, and just walk that thing out. I believe that every gift we have on the inside of us will literally open doors, but only when you truly grasp the fullness of all that you are. That confidence yields relationships, financial opportunities, contracts, and consultancy opportunities, but it all starts with you.
