Her Story
About Ivonne
My career journey has been anything but traditional, and that is what makes it so meaningful. I began my professional path as the owner of a preschool business, which I successfully operated for seven years while supporting my family as a military wife. During that time, I developed a passion for leadership, service, and education, but I also realized I wanted to strengthen my understanding of finance in order to grow my business and create greater opportunities for myself and my family.
After my ex-husband retired from the military and we relocated to Texas, I saw an opportunity to start over and pursue a completely new career path. Despite having no background in banking, I entered the industry as a teller. It was a major transition from working with children to working in finance, but I immediately found a passion for it. I was always eager to learn, take initiative, and step into new responsibilities. I became known as the person who consistently raised her hand and said, “I want to learn. I want to do more.” Even when it meant taking on additional responsibilities without additional pay, I embraced every opportunity to grow.
Through dedication, hard work, and perseverance, I advanced from teller to banker and then to assistant manager. Along the way, I made the difficult decision to step away from my career in an effort to save my marriage. Unfortunately, despite my efforts, my marriage ended in divorce. That chapter of my life was challenging both emotionally and financially, and for a time, I stepped away from banking because I needed to rebuild personally and professionally.
During the pandemic, I worked with the Department of Education, helping individuals navigate student loan programs during an uncertain and difficult time. That experience strengthened my commitment to serving others and reinforced the importance of financial guidance and stability. In 2022–2023, I returned to banking stronger and more determined than ever this time as a regional manager. Today, I oversee branch and back-office operations for the McAllen area, leading teams and helping drive growth and service excellence within my institution.
Beyond my professional role, I am deeply involved in the Rio Grande Valley community. I serve as an ambassador for the McAllen, Edinburg, Pharr, and Hispanic Chambers of Commerce, where I contribute through marketing initiatives, networking, and volunteer work. Community engagement is an important part of who I am because I believe leadership is about creating opportunities and empowering others.
What I am most proud of is the impact I now make in people’s lives. While I once focused on helping children through education, I now help individuals and families through financial literacy and empowerment. I am especially passionate about advocating for women in South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley. Many women still believe they must rely entirely on their spouses for financial security because that is the mindset they were taught and I understand that personally. I experienced what it felt like to go from having financial stability to starting over with very little after my divorce.
That experience became my purpose. Today, I am committed to showing women that they are capable of building their own financial futures. I strive to inspire others to work hard, save, budget wisely, and gain the confidence to become financially independent. My journey has taught me that setbacks do not define us our resilience, determination, and willingness to keep moving forward do.

Ten minutes with Ivonne
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute much of my success to my children. They have been my greatest source of motivation and the driving force behind my growth. I came to this country from Mexico City speaking only Spanish and knowing very little English. Learning a new language was a long and difficult journey, and for many years, I believed my role in life was simply to get married, stay home, and care for my family.
That was the mindset I was raised with, especially as a woman. But as I grew, I realized I wanted something different not only for myself, but for my children, especially my daughters. I wanted them to see that women are capable of pursuing their goals, building careers, and creating opportunities beyond traditional expectations.
My children inspired me to challenge those old beliefs and push beyond my comfort zone. They gave me the courage to grow, to learn, and to become an example of perseverance and independence. Everything I have accomplished has been fueled by the desire to show them that no matter where you come from, the obstacles you face, or the limitations others place on you, it is always possible to create a different path and achieve your dreams
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
One of the best career advices I have ever received in banking was: “Never stop learning, and never believe any position is beneath you.” That advice stayed with me throughout my entire journey because I started at the very bottom as a teller with no banking experience. Instead of focusing on titles, I focused on learning every aspect of the business, building relationships, and understanding how I could grow both personally and professionally.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering the banking industry is to never underestimate your value, your voice, or your ability to grow. Banking is an industry filled with opportunities, but success comes from being willing to learn, stay adaptable, and step outside of your comfort zone. Do not be afraid to start at the bottom. Every position teaches you something valuable, and every experience can become a stepping stone toward leadership
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges I have faced in my career has been navigating traditional mindsets in South Texas, where there is still often an expectation that leadership roles especially in industries like banking and business are meant for men. As a woman in leadership, there are times when it can feel challenging to establish visibility and recognition in spaces that have historically been male dominated.
However, I have never allowed those perceptions to intimidate me. I know the value I bring to the table, the experience I carry, and the impact I can make. Over the years, I have learned the importance of speaking up, standing confidently in my abilities, and reminding others that leadership is not defined by gender, but by knowledge, integrity, and results.
I feel incredibly fortunate to now work alongside strong women leaders in my organization, where women hold many leadership roles and continue to support and empower one another. At the same time, when I participate in Chamber of Commerce events and other business organizations, I still often find myself in environments where men are the majority. In those moments, there can be challenges in making your voice heard and your presence known.
Rather than seeing that as a limitation, I view it as an opportunity to represent women in leadership, to open doors for others, and to help shift outdated perceptions. Every challenge has strengthened my confidence and reinforced my commitment to showing other women that they belong in leadership positions, in business, and at every decision making table. I believe progress happens when women continue to step forward, support one another, and lead with confidence and purpose.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
For me, my faith in God and the importance of family are the foundation of everything I do. They keep me grounded, guide my decisions, and remind me of what truly matters in life. No matter how much success or growth you achieve professionally, it is essential to stay connected to your values and never lose sight of where you came from.
In the field I work in, I strongly believe humility is one of the most important qualities a leader can have. Leadership is not about recognition or personal success it is about serving others, supporting your team, and helping those around you grow. I believe that when a leader succeeds but their team does not, it reflects on the leader, not the team. True success is measured by the success of the people you lead.
I strive to create an environment where my team feels empowered, valued, and confident in their abilities. They should be the face of the success we achieve together. As a leader, my role is to guide, encourage, and lift others up so they can reach their full potential. I believe the strongest teams are built when everyone is given the opportunity to grow, succeed, and feel supported.
At the end of the day, leadership is about making a positive impact, staying humble through every stage of success, and ensuring that no one rises alone.
