Jacqueline Drazan is a geology professional and technical sales strategist with a focus on science-driven business development. Her fascination with the Earth began in seventh grade when she was selected for the GeoFORCE program at the University of Texas at Austin, an experience that sparked a lifelong curiosity about the forces shaping our planet. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Geology from Texas Christian University, followed by a Master of Science in Geological and Earth Sciences from the University of Minnesota Duluth, where she specialized in volcanology and conducted field-based research on ancient and modern volcanic systems, including work in Iceland and Namibia.

Throughout her career, Jacqueline has worked across economic geology, specializing in copper porphyries, and has gained extensive experience on multiple mining operations. She joined Freeport-McMoRan’s Bagdad Operations, where she currently serves as a Senior Geologist, managing ore control geologists, leading software integration for ore optimization, and driving autonomous haulage initiatives. Prior to Freeport, she contributed to magmatic sulfides exploration with Talon Metals, holding roles that combined field research, geological modeling, and team leadership. Her professional philosophy emphasizes integrity, clear communication, and translating complex geological data into actionable business insights.

Beyond her technical work, Jacqueline is committed to fostering the next generation of female geoscientists in male-dominated fields. She actively participates in professional organizations, including the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME), and has served on boards supporting scholarships and STEM education for high school students. Through her mentorship and advocacy, she encourages young women to pursue geology and mining careers while embracing leadership, expertise, and authenticity in the workplace.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is to remember that the science is often the easiest part—navigating unexpected challenges while staying true to yourself is what truly matters. Stay grounded in your personal values, reflect daily on why you chose this path, and communicate clearly and promptly. By doing so, you’ll be able to move forward with confidence and resilience every single day.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Mining remains a male-dominated industry, and navigating it as a woman has shaped how I show up professionally. While the geology is often the easiest part, finding mentors who reflect your experience can be challenging. I’ve learned to seek guidance beyond the industry, and in doing so, I’ve become a stronger scientist—and take pride in inspiring young women to pursue STEM careers.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that guide me most are clear, effective, and timely communication, both in my work and personal life. I balance the technical aspects of my career with creative pursuits like yoga, meditation, reading, and art classes, which help me stay centered and inspired. Beyond my day-to-day work, I am actively involved with the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME), serving on the Grand Canyon SME board and managing scholarship programs for high school students. I’m also passionate about conservation and civic engagement, supporting organizations such as Texas by Nature and local initiatives in Arizona that protect natural resources while promoting responsible development.
