What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute much of my success to my mother, who has been my greatest source of support and encouragement throughout my life. As a first-generation American with parents who immigrated from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, I grew up understanding the value of hard work, perseverance, and opportunity. My mother always wanted me to have access to opportunities she did not have growing up in Puerto Rico, and she consistently emphasized the importance of education and continuous learning. One lesson she instilled in me from an early age is that knowledge is power.
That mindset has shaped the way I approach my career. Regardless of my title or position, I am always seeking opportunities to learn more, ask questions, and deepen my understanding of the business. Whether that means reviewing training materials, studying company resources, or seeking guidance from experienced colleagues, I believe that growth comes from remaining curious and committed to learning.
Whenever I face challenges or moments of uncertainty in my career, my mother reminds me of a lesson that has stayed with me: there is no giving up—there is only moving forward. Her unwavering belief in my abilities has given me the confidence to take risks, embrace new opportunities, change companies, and even relocate to pursue professional growth. Because of her support and guidance, I have been able to continue progressing in my career with resilience, determination, and confidence.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have ever received is that sometimes, in order to move forward, you have to be willing to take a different path than the one you originally envisioned. Early in my career, I viewed any move that wasn't a direct promotion as a step backward. Over time, however, I learned that career growth is rarely linear. Sometimes what appears to be a step back is actually the opportunity that positions you for your greatest growth.
I've come to understand that when one door closes, another often opens, introducing possibilities you may never have considered for yourself. A perfect example is my own career journey. In Kennesaw, I served as a Leasing and Marketing Manager, while today I work as a Leasing Consultant in Orlando. While some may view that transition as a step back, I see it as a strategic move that allowed me to expand my experience, enter a new market, and create opportunities for long-term professional growth.
The lesson I carry with me is that success is not defined by titles alone. It's about continuously learning, embracing new challenges, and remaining open to opportunities that align with your goals. As long as you stay committed, trust the process, and continue investing in yourself, each experience becomes a building block for the next stage of your career.
What once felt like taking a step back ultimately taught me an important truth: it's not about moving backward—it's about having the courage to change your path and trust where it leads.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My biggest piece of advice for young women entering the leasing industry is simple: don't let anyone count you out. There is nothing wrong with being the underdog, and there is nothing wrong with being underestimated. In fact, those situations can often become your greatest advantage.
When I started my leasing career, I was only 21 years old. Because of my age, there were times when people assumed I lacked experience or didn't fully understand the industry. What they didn't realize was that I had invested the time to learn my role, understand the business, and develop the skills necessary to succeed. I knew what I was doing, even when others questioned it.
One lesson I've learned is that you don't have to justify why you earned your position. You were hired for a reason. You earned your seat at the table because of your abilities, your work ethic, and the value you bring to the team. Instead of spending your energy proving yourself to others, focus on showing up, doing your job well, and continuing to grow.
Confidence comes from competence. The more you learn, the more prepared you become, and the less power other people's assumptions have over you. Trust yourself, stay committed to your development, and let your results speak for themselves.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges facing the student housing industry today is the increasing level of competition. Markets throughout Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and other growing college regions have seen a significant influx of new student housing communities. With so many options available to students, leasing professionals must go the extra mile to stand out. Providing exceptional customer service, building genuine relationships, and creating a strong resident experience are more important than ever, because if you don't earn a prospect's trust, another property likely will.
At the same time, that challenge creates one of the industry's greatest opportunities: growth. The expansion of student housing has opened countless career paths for professionals at every level. When I was in college, I didn't even realize student housing was its own industry. Now, I understand that nearly every college town across the country has student housing communities, creating opportunities to build a career in virtually any market.
What I love most about this industry is its flexibility. There are opportunities to grow, relocate, and gain experience in different markets and asset types. I strongly believe that if a particular property or role is no longer the right fit, it's okay to explore new opportunities. Growth often comes from stepping outside of your comfort zone and finding the environment where you can thrive. The beauty of student housing is that there is always another opportunity to learn, develop, and advance your career.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Two of the values that are most important to me, both personally and professionally, are integrity and compassion. I strongly believe that doing the right thing matters, even when it's not the easiest option. I approach every interaction with honesty, respect, and the intention of treating people fairly. While policies and procedures are important, I don't believe they should ever be an excuse for being dismissive, rude, or lacking empathy.
One of the lessons I've learned throughout my career is that difficult conversations are often defined by how they are delivered. You can communicate challenging news while still treating someone with kindness, respect, and understanding. That philosophy has become especially important in student housing, where residents are often navigating financial, academic, and personal challenges all at once.
Resident advocacy is something I am particularly passionate about. When a resident comes to us with a problem, my first instinct is not to tell them what can't be done—it's to explore what options may be available to help. Whether that means discussing payment plans, identifying alternative solutions, or working with management to find a path forward, I believe it is our responsibility to support residents whenever possible.
One example that reflects this value is a current resident who has been experiencing issues with their rent payment processing. Rather than simply accepting the situation, I have continued working with our management team to identify a solution that will help the resident successfully resolve the issue. When residents see that we are genuinely invested in helping them, it builds trust and creates a stronger sense of community. More importantly, it lets them know that when challenges arise, they have a team that cares and is willing to advocate on their behalf.
For me, success is not just about following policies—it's about balancing accountability with empathy and ensuring that every person I interact with feels respected, heard, and supported.
