About Jalay
Jalay Knowles is a dedicated educator and school counselor at Ossining Union Free School District in Ossining, New York, with a strong commitment to student success, educational equity, and personal development. Since beginning her career in education in 2019, she has focused on helping students navigate academic challenges, prepare for college, and transition confidently through high school. She earned her bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Hartford, where she played basketball on a full athletic scholarship, and later pursued a master's degree in Counselor Education and School Counseling at Mercy University. Following her graduate studies, Jalay became a certified school counselor in New York State, bringing her educational background and passion for student advocacy together in her professional practice.
In her role as a school counselor, Jalay supports students with college applications, academic planning, and important educational transitions while ensuring that their individual needs and perspectives are recognized. Equity remains central to her work, and she actively participates in her district's District Equity Committee and Building Equity Committee while serving as an Equity Fellow and Student Equity Advisor. Her dedication to inclusive education has also led her to present at New York University's Equity Conference, where she contributed to conversations about supporting marginalized students and fostering more equitable learning environments. Additionally, Jalay has organized community initiatives, including a Walk for Change event that attracted more than 2,000 participants, demonstrating her ability to bring people together around meaningful causes. Her professional journey has been shaped by influential mentors who encouraged her confidence and perseverance, reinforcing her belief in the lasting impact educators can have on students' lives.
Jalay attributes much of her success to the unwavering support of her family, particularly during challenging periods in her education and career. She values authenticity, integrity, meaningful relationships, and creating opportunities for students to experience those transformative moments of understanding and personal growth. Beyond her professional responsibilities, she enjoys reading, writing, journaling, playing video games, watching sports, and spending quality time with family, friends, and colleagues. Looking ahead, Jalay hopes to continue expanding her knowledge, strengthening collaborations among educators, and developing written work that highlights equity in education. Through her commitment to student-centered counseling and inclusive practices, she strives to ensure that every student's voice is heard, valued, and empowered.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the unwavering support and encouragement of my family. They have been my constant source of motivation, helping me persevere through challenges in my education and personal life. Their guidance and support have helped me overcome obstacles while keeping me grounded, and I am deeply grateful for the important role they have played in my achievements.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve received came from mentors who encouraged me to believe in myself and recognize my abilities. Gillian McGraw reminded me, “You know the answer, just take the time,” which strengthened my confidence. I’m also grateful to my internship supervisor, Maria, for her invaluable guidance and support. These mentors have had a lasting impact on my journey and inspire me to offer the same encouragement and support to others.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering this industry is to trust the process, embrace the ups and downs, and stay true to your character and values. Remain committed to personal and professional growth while making a meaningful, positive impact on the lives of children.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field is keeping up with constant changes while staying organized. My experience as a college athlete helped me develop strong time-management skills. I deeply value my community’s support and patience and am grateful for the opportunity to grow in my role, inspire others, and make a positive difference in their lives.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I value authenticity, integrity, and building meaningful relationships. I have a deep love for children and find joy in witnessing their “aha” moments when learning clicks. I’m also passionate about bringing people together to create positive change, as demonstrated by organizing a Walk for Change that brought together 2,000 participants. These values continue to guide my work and commitment to promoting equity and making a meaningful difference in my community.
