Her Story
About Jalee
I've been in the accounting field for nearly six years now, reaching the Senior Associate level after five years with my firm. In my role, I review and produce financial statements for several different companies here in Amarillo. I hold both my bachelor's and master's degrees in accounting, completing my master's in 2021. Currently, I'm studying for the CPA exam, which represents both my biggest challenge and opportunity in my career right now. Beyond my day-to-day responsibilities, I'm actively involved at Johnson & Sheldon as part of the Confetti Council, our volunteer party planning committee. I also serve as the liaison between our firm and West Texas A&M University, where I handle all communication, conduct mock interviews with students, and coordinate our participation in events like Meet the Accounting Firms. It's rewarding to be that middleman and help students prepare for their careers. My faith is central to everything I do - I couldn't have made it through college and learned everything in my career without God's help. I'm very hard on myself, so the best advice I've received is to do my very best work and give it over to God. When I don't get something right, I remind myself that if I do my best, that's all I can do.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Jalee
01What do you attribute your success to?
I definitely attribute my success to God. He's helped me along through college and through learning all of these different things in my career. I couldn't have done it without him. My faith has been the foundation that's carried me through the challenges and growth I've experienced in this field.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've ever received is to do my very best work and give it over to God. I'm very hard on myself, so when I don't get something right or whatever, I beat myself up. My boss tells me that, and I remind myself that if I do my best, that's all I can do. It's helped me let go of perfectionism and trust that my best effort is enough.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I think just to take it one day at a time. It's a lot to learn, and it's scary. But every day that goes by, you'll be more comfortable, you'll learn something else. Don't let the overwhelming nature of the field discourage you - growth happens gradually, and each day brings new understanding and confidence.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
My biggest challenge and opportunity is probably both the same thing, and it's studying and passing the CPA exam. I'm currently in the studying phase, and this certification represents a major milestone in my accounting career. It's challenging because of the rigor involved, but it's also the key opportunity that will open new doors for my professional growth.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me in my work and personal life are growth, compassion, and integrity. These three principles guide how I approach my career, how I interact with colleagues and clients, and how I navigate both professional and personal challenges. They reflect what I believe matters most in building a meaningful career and life.
