Her Story
About Jamee
I've been working in HR for over 20 years, and I've been running my own consulting practice for about three and a half years now. Most of my experience has been in manufacturing and distribution environments, though I've also done some consulting in healthcare. I work primarily with small to medium-sized organizations that don't have an HR department, providing them support and guidance through general people operations issues, challenges, and opportunities. My typical day involves managing and advising leaders on HR concerns or opportunities, whether that's employee relations, recruiting, training and development, or system implementation. It really varies depending on the type of client I'm working with at that time. Before starting my own business, I spent over 11 years at Image First, where I started as an HR manager when they had 170 employees and worked my way up to Vice President of Human Resources by the time they grew to over 3,500 employees. Being part of that growth and having the opportunity to really develop and build the HR function there was one of my most notable achievements. Now, leaving that environment and moving into my own business, I'm able to share my knowledge and experience with my clients. The nice thing about working for myself is I control what I want to do. My referral business is phenomenal, and I get the luxury of working when I want to work now as I slow down in my career.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Jamee
01What do you attribute your success to?
I think growing up, hard work was always instilled in me. My parents were great role models from that perspective. I've worked since I was young, and nothing comes easy. You have to put time, and you have to put energy and effort into it. I was fortunate enough to have opportunities presented to me. I was an athlete also growing up, so the discipline that I had to put into that really defined, I think, who I am today and how I got where I am today. And I tell my kids the same thing. You know, you've got to work hard for what you want. It'll come to you, but you've got to work hard for it.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
I think take advantage of any opportunity that somebody gives you. Don't say no to an opportunity. And try to make the best of it, whether you enjoy doing it or not, you're gonna take something away from it.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Have really thick skin. HR's a tough field today. You really have to hold your ground, you have to stand up for what you think is the right thing. There's so many different areas of HR today that people can go into that I didn't have when I first started, so I became a true generalist, but there's so many specific areas of HR that you can go into. So, you know, get your feet wet, get involved, learn as much as you can, but you've gotta be tough in this industry. It's very litigious today. You've gotta just know what you're doing, stick close to what you're doing. And I think probably the one thing I always tell, not even my clients, I would tell young folks getting in is, when you start working in HR, you gotta document everything that you do. You gotta show your path, you gotta keep it clean, kind of thing.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
You know, the nice thing about working for myself is I kind of control what I want to do. It's just me. My husband helps me out with my business, but, you know, I don't honestly, I can say that I don't have a lot of challenges right now. I've been very lucky with the clients that I've had over the years. My referral business is phenomenal, and I get the luxury of working when I want to work now, as I slow down in my career. So, you know, I mean, my opportunities are endless. If I want to keep working and keep growing my business, it's there. If I don't want to, you know, I can take a step back. So I feel very fortunate, and very lucky to be in the position that I'm in right now.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity, honesty. I am a, I pride myself on being committed. So, I guess committed. I just, I take pride in what I do. I've done it for a long time. And I always want to do right by my customers, my clients.
